How do you tell if you have a 4 or 2 player TMNT? and can you switch between the two?

I got this thing in a converted Berzerk cab and i put it in my NFL Blitz '99 game and it powered right up...but, it's only showing 2 players? is that just the way the screen is when it starts up or is there a way to change between 2 and 4 players?

I can't do much because the NFL Blitz game has an issue with the joysticks not working...so...all i could do was see if the board was dead or not.

Any help on this is appreciated.

I was planning on putting the TMNT in the NFL Blitz cab and just doing a fresh wire harness all that from scratch...only thing used from the Blitz would be the monitor basically....but, now I am not sure if this is a 4 player or not and if not then there is no reason to put it in the Blitz...I can just rebuild another cab.

here are some pics of the TMNT...maybe that will show what you need to answer? Kinda confused because it only shows 2 player on one screen but shows all 4 on the other?

Also shows it "Hero" turtles? must be the UK version?

As far as I know the US version was only 4 player. If my memory serves me, it sucked on a 2 player cab because you could only choose between the turtles based on which coin slot you put the coin in (i.e. you could only play the first two turtles). The coin slots on the 4 player cab are wired to each respective turtle.
I purchased a set of Oceania roms for it when I had a board (or you can burn them yourself) to have 2p action on mine.
You look to have a European version. I would assume you could burn the 4p roms and install those.

Yep. Looks like you have a 2 player version. Not necessarily a bad thing, though, because it's pretty hard to comeby a TMNT cabinet to put one in, you'll find a two player cabinet to put one in my more easily.

well...the info here says this:

Miscellaneous

This is the UK version of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
There is also a two-player version of this game which is just the same but it has a player select screen and only two sets of controls.

my screenshots dont show 4 players like the screenshots in the database here do...so i guess it's the 2 player UK version? I have no idea how this thing ended up here in a damn Berzerk cab...odd...and it has the Ninja marquee, not the hero version.

I wonder if the 4 player ROMs are the only difference or if there is a hardware difference on the board.

nothing is ever as easy as it sounds is it? lol.

It probably just needs a ROM flash. Don't forget it's developed by a Japanese company, and typically they used two player candy cabs there.

I doubt there is a difference as I was able to switch my 4 player board to a 2 player board with a rom swap.

i dont have any way to burn the ROMS myself...do you know of any place I could get them now? I'd like to get the 4 player US version if that would work.

Hobby Roms could do it, but it might be a little pricey as it's a 4 rom swap. You might find someone else on here willing to do it. I don't have the capability to do it myself.

If you get the MAME set for the US 4p version, there are 4 files numbered 21 - 24. You need to have those files burned and swap out those chips on your board.

Steph at hobbyroms should be able to do it. He advised me he could until I realised the roms that shipped with my TMNT board were for the 2 player version. Think Steph quoted me @ $30 Canadian shipped for the 4 roms to vonvert 4p to 2p, so imagine it would be the same reversed.. :)

Awesome game.. wish I could source a 4 player cab here in New Zealand at a decent price :)

I ordered a set from Steph...should be here soon. Thanks for the info guys.

oh...another quick question...

i found the manual for the TMNT 4 player and was looking it over..there is a sub harness of some sort for the 3rd and 4th players...does anyone happen to have a pic of it or have an extra one? or know where i can get one?

I assume I will just have to build one or rig up something....book shows a 15 pin connector with only 8 wires being used in each...goes to CN3 and CN4.

Again...it's going in an NBA Jam cab and I'm going to remove everything, put a new Jamma harness in there, new 8 way sticks and buttons, just trying to figure out how i will have to wire everything up now...think I have everything pretty much figured out how i will do it, just need some info on the 3 & 4 player wiring.

***Edit....nevermind...I found one here:

Not sure if they are the cheapest plaace, but I've ordered other Jamma + harnesses from them recently and all been good.

once i figured out what it was called, i found several on google, thats the cheapest i've found so far...others are $25 to $30? pretty high for what it is...I could build one easy with the correct connector i think.

Get them from Bob, way cheaper.

No they are not :) (I'm assuming you mean Bob Roberts http://www.therealbobroberts.net/harn.html)

I've just scoured Bobs website for the 2nd time and I love the details and products he supplies. But living in NZ, Paypal makes is so convenient for me so it rules him out unless it was something very specific I required.
