TMNT 4 player arcade won't fire up. (Video Inside)

The cab I bought won't fire up. I was told when I bought it the board just stopped working one day. No big deal...but I'd like to see if this is an easy repair or not.

Here is a video of what is going on when I flip the switch. The monitor comes on...displaying a grey screen, and the speaker occasionally pops and such ( you'll hear what I mean in the video ).

Anyone ever seen something like this?

check the voltages yet? could just be a dead power supply, hopefully.

Thanks for the reply. Here's what I do know.
I watched this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=idievP6zuyY

This cab only had a two prong power cord, which was split halfway down the cable, and electric taped up. Removing the tape showed corroded wire. So I snipped that off and replaced it with a standard PC power cord, soldering it to the EMI filter, green ground wire in the center.

Plug in, everything powers on to the same way in the video. Remove the board, unplug the monitor harness, plug the power back in set my multimeter ( cheapo from radio shack with audible continuity tester ) to AC.
Touch the FG and the AC and it reads a perfect 110.

Switch to DC, touch the +-5 and ground, 0.00 reverse probes same thing. Touch the 12v and ground, also 0.00.

Now...testing these isn't exactly rocket science, I'm not getting any reading on DC regardless if I touch the ground with the black or red probe. I only have the plug plugged in. Am I supposed to power the unit on as well to test these readings???
The way I was testing was just plugged in, and off.

My problem is, if the power supply isn't outputting DC...how the hell is the monitor, and the marquee coming on??

How do you expect to get a reading if it's off?

Well...I assumed since I got readings for AC with it off, I'd get readings for DC as well. Now I do understand the folly of my ways. Had the wife help out, hold in the back door button and flip the power. Got the following readings.

+5v12A 8.45
-5v1A -7.74
+12v2.5A 18.98

Now...I don't know anything about arcades, I'm just learning...but those numbers seem WAYYYY off. And likely the reason as to why the board no longer works. Probably fried it.

Since I have a new working board in the mail right now, I want to make sure everything is good to go before plugging in a good working board and frying it. Boy would THAT suck.

Can I adjust this power supply, or is it borked?

If you recommend me replacing it, do you guys recommend this one?

is there an adjustment pot on the power supply? if so, turn it most of the way down and measure again. voltages that far off may have killed a few things (processor, ram, corrupt roms).

There is what looks to be an adjustment knob labeled "H".

Is that it? And will it turn them all down?

Are you testing this with the TMNT pcb connected? You won't get proper readings if the power supply isn't under a load from the game pcb.

Game is not plugged in. Just went back again to turn the pot down, it was turned nearly all the way up. Even turning it all the way down only got the numbers down to:
+5v12A 7.45
-5v1A -6.74
+12v2.5A 17.98

I'll have to plug the game in and test again tomorrow.

Should I readjust using the pot once it's under load to as close to +5, -5 +12 as I can?

Yes, you want to adjust the pot with the power supply under load, but it only controls the +5 volts...the -5 and +12 aren't really adjustable. I've always understood them to be less important as far as how close they are reading on your meter.

Those voltages seem way to high even for an unloaded PSU. I have only noticed a difference of around 0.3V on my supplies between loaded and unloaded.

I wouldn't plug that pcb back in until you can get the +5 rail to under 5.5V unloaded.

If that board was plugged in while the voltage was at 8.45 there is a very good chance
that it was damaged.

Is your multi-meter digital? I once got really dodgy voltage readings on my power supply with a DMM because it's battery was low. I was adjusting the knob through it's full range and never was able to get the voltage below 5.8v even with a load on it.

Later I tried a different multi-tmeter and found that the voltages were actually too low, not high. I replaced the battery in my first meter and then the values matched on both.

I ended up wasting a couple of hours on that one. :(

I also agree that you won't get any useful readings unless you put a load on the power supply, but the readings you have now are pretty far off even without a load.

Brian.

Well...I'm assuming the board is already fried. So this afternoon, I'll plug her back in, and test again under load.

Funny that you should mention the battery on the DMM (Yes, it's digital). Someone left it on the last time it was used, and the batteries were dead, so I actually had to go get some new ones. Like I said though...the AC measured perfect. Coming from my UPS, the power was a clean and rock solid 110v. from the wall.

Will report my findings a bit later.

Plugged in board, tested and got the following with the pot turned all the way to low (clockwise) as far as it would go.

Readings are as follows:

+5v12A 7.09
-5v1A -6.54
+12v2.5A 17.53

I'm guessing if the board was run on just voltages THIS high, it would have gotten burned out. But what I found was that the pot was turned nearly completely to high. The board had been running at around 8v.

With a working board in the mail, should I start with getting a replacement power supply like the one I linked previously in this thread?

I went ahead and ordered this one...

http://hollandcomputers.auctionsoun...rcade+Switching+Power+Supply+-+110W,+110/220V

Should have it around when I get the new board in.
Any chance the old board will still be any good with a new power supply?

I bought that same supply x3 and don't be surprised if it comes a bit bent up, epically the +5 volt adjustment or the bottom feet. It is a very good buy and only had the replace one pot for the +5vdc adjustment for the bench supply.

That is great to hear kb0jjn, thank you!

I was unable to find any reviews on it, and was nervous. LOL
