Tired of seeing classsic cabs hoarded by multiboard jobbers..

Every ad I see now on kijiji for my local area is filled with crappy 60-1 multiboard jobs in random cabs being sold for 1200$! The monitors seems to be in good shape, but damn! I'm tired of seeing cabs for classic games (or just good titles) being 'hoarded' that way. And the guys have been trying to sell the same cabs for months sometimes. I even emailed a few guys asking if they would sell the cab without the board for a decent, honest price (Im not talking lowballing offers, i wouldnt mind paying 500$ for a machine in good shape with a monitor in very good shape. WHen I get answers, I get bullshit replies like "Sorry cant sell them, the boards are worth 400 each$! Its official merch, not bootleg) (SUCH BULLSHIT)

I also feel bad for people buying those machines thinking they are getting a good deal for 1200$, considering most pirate boards are 60$ :S

I managed to pick up a super rare non-bootleg CABAL board, the joystick edition (!!!!) and I need a cab to install in it; and I just can't find anything decent! I got the sidearts marquees + manuals, it just needs a cab :(

Sorry, I had to vent!

(prices are in CAN $ and pricings are normal for my local area, my particular province is dead when it comes to arcade collecting)

I agree. Sadly, so many classic games are getting ruined by mufti-boards. Not only hoarded though, but ruined too! If they don't care about playing the actual game on actual hardware, why not just build mame cabinets?

It's really all about educating people. I know that some people here do multicades right, but usually they are freaking horrible. Many times half the games are unplayable. People just don't know they're horrible because they have fuzzy memories of the dedicated versions of the games. Usually when they start to see that some games have 2-way, 4-way, diagonal, roatary, etc. sticks that affect gameplay, and some games have analog sounds that affect the sound (sometimes dramatically) they appreciate the dedicated games more.

It's sad, but the truth. Almost EVERY retro arcade cabinet was once a happy Ms. Pac-Man or another game... ruined.
And also, almost everyone these days who sells these multicabs thnk they are SOOO rare.

...if people spent as much time restoring their classic arcade machines as they do bitching about other people doing what they want with their machines, a lot more classic arcade machines would be "saved" from the "evil multigame".

Funny thing is I don't see many multi games being resold by buyers (lot of dealers selling, but not many buyers).

I'm curious as to what the buyers try to get for them and what they actually sell for.

+1 :)

If I HAD to make an original a multigame, I would simply keep everything intact except the board or maybe the marquee. Not strip it down, repaint, apply crappy new art, install marquees, etc.

I'll build a multi here and there, but I strictly stick to games which have already been jammatized or converted eons ago. I strip the monitor (working or not) and give it to a collector. With all new parts, new LCD monitor, and new paint/art I typically sell multis FAST between 600 and 750.

I ran across this earlier and didn't add to the general KLOV dislike of destroying an old cab. Then I made my first trip to the byoac forums. First thread I read was about somebody scored a 6 player X-men (which I want), one of the first few comments was I would "MAME'ize" that thing. I am now back here...

Dude, I feel for you! Before I got My Cruis'n USA, I saw a post (not sure if it was here) about a guy who got one and turned it into a PC driving cab! GRRRR That got my blood boiling. I agree that if you own something, it's yours to do with what you want but why not take something that is already destroyed or make one from scratch before ruining a classic that someone else could be preserving and enjoying?

I have a ms pacman that was a 1 in 60.. I got it cheap so I could spend the dollars and covert it back.

You know if I had the time, I would just build a few hundred cabs and just flood the market here with really cheap 1 n 60. I am sure I can find cheap computer CRT. Solder the wires directly into he edge board. Build at sell at cost for year or two. I bet that would free up more classic games.

But I know, it would hurt a few people I know who are struggling to survive and taking food out their families mouths out weighs the thought of saving classic games.

Meh. I understand the economics (I think), and it's pretty compelling. You could spend several hundred restoring a dedicated classic. But you only need to spend a couple hundred to convert something into a 60-in-1 with an LCD and inkjet art. And in the end, the multi will probably sell for more, and will definitely sell more quickly and you can sell them all day long.

What can you do except go home and hug your <classic game(s) of choice>?

Wait til the Asteroids mulit-game comes out and everyone HERE fucks up their perfectly good Asteroids with new mult-craptacular marquees and control panel overlays.
