MONMOUTH – Gloria Joy Hooper, 83, Monmouth, died at 5:03 a.m. on Sunday, November 15, 2009, at OSF St. Mary Medical Center in Galesburg.

I lost my grandmother on sunday but something I want to share ... well I thought it fit well here.

My grandfather had to retire early from the post office because the bag he carried finaly pinched a nerve in his sholder . Not a man to sit around and do nothing my grand mother
serched for somthing for him to do . She got him a Atari 2600 and he got hooked on pac man . There were times that he wanted to play but she wanted to watch tv so she picked him up a min pac hand held to play and got me one too since I loved to play pac with grandpa . He and I would have high score contests and mom would be my witness and grandma his when we flipped the game (after you hit a certin point it would go back to 0 )
I think we got to around 7 flips . Years later she told me that doing that with me let him forget he was in pain and that she was always thankfull for that .

I am thank full for all the love that she showed and creating something with my grandfather that i will never forget .

Hold that memory with you, forever. Awesome for sure.

So sorry for your loss.

+1. That's a really cool story.

I wish I had video game memories like that with my grandparents... Well, technically, my grandma bought me my Atari 2600. But nowhere near as cool and specific as your story.

She will be missed, for sure. Thanks for sharing that!

That's Great...!!

I remember when the Atari 2600 came out I was around 8 or 9 years old. My grandma and grandpa were living with us while there house was being built about 10 miles from where we lived..
Anyway..for Xmas they bought me my 2600. When Pacman came out my grandma got totally hooked on it and for a whole summer she had a running contest with me and my Dad on who could keep the high score for the longest, who could get the best score before losing your first man, and other stuff...it was funny as hell and one of the best memories I have..
My Nana (grandma) had a stoke back in July and when we spoke on the phone two weeks after her stroke all she could talk about was that summer we all played Pacman..

I am sorry to hear about your loss, but happy it helps jar a great memory for you during your childhood...remember to pass that SAME kind of memory on to your own kids and grandkids someday!

Take Care,

Jess (True)

stories like this make me glad to have finally found a cool group with an awesome hobby in common. I'm really sorry to hear about your grandmother...she is in a better place for sure and in peace my friend.

so sorry to hear this, but it is great that you have awesome memories to carry you through the years.

This whole thread actually made me tear up (and screw any of you who make "man up" replies) due to the time me, my little brother, and cousins had playing 2600 only when we all got together for Christmas, Birthdays, etc.

My parents got us a 2600, my cousins got a ColecoVision (we were really jealous) but none of our parents really ever understood this "fad" which has evolved into the next generation of entertainment - now in the mainstream.

They still don't - my parents still don't understand how I make money doing what I do (tech support).

Later on, I got an Atari 800 computer and the same cousins got a Commodore. Funny how that pans out over time.

Ironically, I'm the only arcade collector or gamer of any kind in all my family - immediate or extended.

That just proves Atari was and is the best.

But the whole history also proves that games don't drive people apart, they always have and always will give us something in common. And being able to say you played any game - video, console, or table, or any game - with your grandparents, and that they remember it decades later, is something to cherish.

That memory is a keeper.

I am truely sorry for your loss.

Grandma's are awesome. What a great memory. I love my Grandma, as she pretty much raised me. I am sorry for your loss.

my condolences again Buddy. Great story too. I got a coleco for Christmas when i was a kid, and my Grandma never saw anything like it. I was playing ladybug, and she wanted to try it. I think we played it for about 3 or 4 hours, and she loved it.

My parents were going out of town for a weekend a few weeks later, and had my grandparents watch me and my two brothers. When we got there, she said she had a suprise for us. We went into the den where the big console tv was, and there was a coleco all set up, with about 30 games (we had 3!), the Turbo steering wheel, and the Atari 2600 adapter, and about 40 atari games. We absolutely freaked out. She passed away 4 1/2 years ago Durring heart surgery and i miss her every day.

are you talking about galesburg IL by chance? i used to live there when i was kid. that is where i fell in love with video games. between the old bowling alley and aladdin's castle in the mall, galesburg will always hold a special place for me.

:)

Yes I grew up in monmouth il and when ever mom would go to the mall in galesburg
my brother and i would head for aladins castle
I have about 3000 aladins tokens to run my arcade off of because of that :)
