Hi all,

Im trying to troubleshoot an issue with my Time Crisis. Worked fine when it was purchased... monitor is messed up after moving it.

The gun with shoot and register only in the middle of the screen and I have to be very close up (Barrel to the plexi)

The screen has red on both sides (as seen in the pics) I have tried to adjust the pots but nothing helps. All connections have been checked... seems like the monitor is throwing everything off.

Is this a degaussing issue? Any suggestions for troubleshooting? Thanks!

Definitely looks like it needs to be degaussed. Have you tried doing that yet?

It's possible that the monitor's internal degaussing circuit is not functioning. It's supposed to fire every time the game is turned on from cold, as the Earth's magnetic field affects the CRT. When you move a game, the shadow mask gets slightly magnetized.

Another possibility is that the yoke shifted when you moved it. But, start by trying to degauss it manually, see if you can get it clear up.

Ok cool I will look for the manual degauss button when I get home... but from memory I dont remember anything in the coin door except for the test switch and service button.

Do most people use the drill method for degaussing? or buy a wand?

Also, am I right in thinking that if the screen needs degaussed it will prevent the gun from registering in those areas of the screen that are affected? Thanks guys!

A manual degauss button is pretty rare in my experience. But, if it has one, it'll probably be on the little remote adjustment board for the monitor.

I use a homemade degaussing coil. In a pinch, you can also use a corded electric drill (battery drill won't work) or a large soldering gun. Both those will function, just not as well. A proper coil is definitely the best way. You can either buy one, or make one.

Look inside the game, make sure the monitor's own degaussing coil is properly plugged into the chassis. It's pretty easy to forget to hook it back up when the chassis is worked on, and if the previous owner repaired the monitor, and reassembled it, he might not have hooked the degaussing coil back up. In that case, you should just be able to plug it in and power the game up a few times from cold (i.e. off for a half hour or so) to clean it up.

When you made yours did you salvage it from an old TV? What is the minimum size TV you can take one out of? Thanks for your help!

Yeah, I pulled it from a junked TV. The larger the set, the longer the coil, and the longer you can have it plugged in before it melts. I've used coils from 32", 27" and 25" sets. I've also used the coils from two 19" sets, wired in series. They all worked fine. Just wind the coil up smaller, tape it, and add a power cord to it. A switch is also nice to have, but you can also just use an extension cord and plug/unplug it to use. The coil WILL GET HOT, and pretty quickly. You only need to use it for a few seconds, so it's no big deal.

Anyone know if this soldering gun would work for degaussing?

Maybe. Maybe not. If you have one, give it a try. It won't hurt anything if it doesn't work - it just might not put out enough of a magnetic field to have much affect. But don't go buy a soldering gun to degauss with. Nothing is going to degauss as well as a degaussing coil (homemade or purchased).

Before doing any manual degaussing, check to see if the monitor's built in coil is connected properly.

Hey All... finally got a degaussing coil... used it and it took the the pink out of the picture! Looks great!

But... the light gun works better but still doesnt work very well from a distance. The gun still needs to be close up to the plexi to register in some areas of the screen.

Do I just need to degause it a few more times? Ideas?
