I've been playing Timber a bit lately on Mame. When I say I've been playing on Mame, I mean on my laptop, not in a Mame cabinet. We're talking arrow keys to move and alt and ctrl to "chop". The game is still fun this way, but I'm thinking would be way more fun with a setup more like the arcade.

My question here is about how the Timber control panel worked. I never played this game in person back in the day or now. I've seen pictures, though. It looks to me like there is a 4-way joystick to move the guy around the screen and then a two way joystick labeled "chop" which I guessing the player pushed left to chop left and right to chop right. Of course Timber could be a 2 player game, so there is an identical setup on each side.

Can any Timber owners help me out here with some info? I'm sure what I'm going to do yet. Maybe try to find a Timber control panel or maybe build my own (after Christmas). We'll see.

As you can see in the pic,http://www.arcade-museum.com/game_detail.php?game_id=10113 looking at the CP you will see both sets of controls. Identical, and you are correct 4 way with a 2 way for chop left or right.
hope this helps.

Here is a better pic of the CP on my game.

Thanks for that! Very cool pic of your game.

It's funny. Before yesterday I didn't know you could nudge the trees down after chopping them a bit. I found that after watching the instructions in attract mode yesterday because my daughter was playing the game with me. I got a much better score after figuring that out.

When I play in MAME I try and replicate the arcade controls as much as possible so I use my left hand for the arrow keys and then use the "0" on the number pad for left chop and the Enter key for right chop. I just got my machine this last Saturday and after a few plays my experience is that moving is a lot easier with the joystick but chopping is a lot easier using a button instead of a joystick.

As you just probably figured out, three chops and a nudge is faster than four chops. Here's a huge tip that most people don't know about this game. Starting with round 4, if you drop all of the trees in the same direction, you get a 5k bonus. The difficulty maxs at round 17. After this, there are only 5 differnt boards and you always get 62 seconds to complete. On my own, I created patterns for each of these 5 boards. I can get the bonus on two of them but on the other three I play conservative and just clear the boards. Once you figure out how to clear these 5 boards in less then 62 seconds then you can pretty much play this game as long as you want. With the way I play, I can score about 600k per hour.

Thanks for the tips and the info. I'm very jealous that you have a dedicated machine. Very cool.

I hope to someday play on a real Timber. We'll see, I guess.
