Tim McVey is currently attempting to reclaim the world record at Nibbler.

See the live feed here:
http://www.twitch.tv/sprinter461

The record is currently held by Rick Carter who scored 1,002,222,360 on July 31st this past year.

Tim's previous record was 1,000,042,270 set January 15th 1984.

Both are amazing marathon players, and it should be interesting to watch...
He estimates it will take approximately 48 hours of game play to reach his goal.

Go Tim Go! :001_sbiggrin:

Not being up on the logistics of marathon play, how does one handle bio-breaks in a 48hr session?

The Oklahoma City bomber is going for a world record. ;)

Is there any way to record some of this footage ? Or will there be a DVD available ?

An unfortunate name coincidence. Different spelling at least ;) As to breaks, they're plentiful in Nibbler. You get an extra life every 4 boards, and you can't let it go over 128. That's what ended his Labor day attempt. If you let it go over 128, the next time you die, the game ends. Complicating that is when you get over 100, it starts showing oddball codes, like A3, B5, 0, etc. So if you play too good, you have to take a break occasionally.

Echoing what CrazyKong said, yeah...usually marathon gamers choose games that allow them proper bathroom breaks. Tim was talking earlier about some games requiring depends though...Star Wars was one he mentioned. He also said Billy Mitchell dragged a centipede cab into the bathroom to marathon that one BITD. Q*Bert is similar to Nibbler....you keep collecting men for every 14k points. In Rick Carter's case, he had acquired a little more than 2,000 guys during his 59 hour run last month in Ottumwa. He would take 5-10 minute breaks in which he'd lose between 20 and 40 guys.

Some guys leave their archives up on Twitch.tv, but most delete their recordings soon after their live feed goes offline. I assume they don't want others learning their patterns or technique which is understandable. The only public DVD I know of is Steve Wiebe's 1,064,500 point Donkey Kong record. He has made that one available for purchase on his website.

After asking Rick and Tim about this, it seems the reason they don't leave their streams up isn't because of technique, but because Twitch.tv removes them automatically for some reason.

Tim did say he had a DVD set of his Easter 09 run where he scored 980mil+ if anyone is interested in that. Also said he'd consider doing a flash media release of this game if he can figure it out.

Still going strong after 15 hours currently at 418mil...Go Tim Go! :001_sbiggrin:

Tim McVey has retaken the world record in Nibbler! ...and is STILL going...

and yeah...usually complete mental breakdown ensues with full on hallucinations when they finally give in to the machine.

Congrats Tim! :001_sbiggrin:

Why did he choose Christmas Eve / Christmas for this run? It's almost guaranteed that nobody will be watching. I would have taken a peek, but just too busy. Nice to see that another world record has been broken... and nice to see one reclaimed!

Congrats.

He has to do it when he has time off from work...and there was a huge online crowd watching when he broke the billion...so much for guaranteeing nobody would be watching :)

He did it because Star Worlds made T-Shirts up celebrating his regaining the record in 2011. He was supposed to have regained it during the festivities in Ottumwa last month, but his game had a glitch mid-marathon...and because he's marathoning, he had to work it around days off, so Christmas break it was. :001_scool:

He plans to leave the recorded feed up on twitch for those who want to view it after the fact...It's an amazing run indeed. His pacing was incredible. "Speed-Run Nibbler" :p

I guess I just assumed that nobody would be watching. Well hell then, glad to see he had some support!

Ah - the T-Shirt thing probably also influenced the timing. So what is Star Worlds, why are they printing T-Shirts for this world record (as opposed to some others...), and who gets them? Just curious about this part, and what that's all about.

The new Nibbler World Record: 1,041,767,060
Finished just shy of 12:30am EST just under 40 hours of total game play.

Incredible :)

Star Worlds Arcade is an awesome classic arcade in DeKalb, IA(someone else can help me fill in the other details about it that I don't know). I assume they printed shirts to support Tim the "billion point man" in regaining his record. :001_sbiggrin:

Glenn from Starworlds is a member here.
Very passionate business those guys run. A living museum.
In the past marathon attempts they have sponsored Tim and done some charity drives.

Pat and Glenn are good friends with Tim. Call them if you need shirts, I'm sure they'll oblige.
