long story short........

everyday on my lunch break i hit up 3 thirft stores that are very close to my work (so much fun). a couple weeks back, i was talking to one of my "amigos" who shops @ the goodwill store. he knows im a big fan of everything videogames. he then tells me about something he found a few days back.

he says .... "it looks different than most of the PLAYSTATION 2's i find." "it says TOOL on the side and this thing is big!". he then asks me if i want it?? of course i say "yes please".

fast forward to this week...... he brings it to me in his truck. i make him a offer and he accepts. i've never seen one of these before. turns out its a PLAYSTATION 2 DEVELOPMENT KIT (TOOL) from a few years back. its as big as a dell computer and super heavy. i really dig the way sony made it look like a oversized ps2 (very cool).

i have no idea about programming (total newb), got it powered up and it does work. it looks like it goes into a debugging screen and thats as far as i can get. anyone familiar with this machine?? all in all it was a good day! chris

here's some pics......

That is a really cool 'Tool'. Not sure what you will do with it, though.

I would of had to pick it up as well if I had stumbled across one. :)

It may be looking for a keyboard/mouse at boot. That screen is showing its network settings. Trying hooking up a kb/mouse - looks like USB. You may want to research it on the 'Net first, though.

That is friggen awesome!

You might need to be connected to their dev server to be able to use it though... Just going by a click glance on the screen.

So I think the consensus here is that these dudes who have posted so far really like your tool, and wish they had it to play with...

It looks like it sold for $19k usd new, but that's because it was used to develop game for the system. Hard to say what it would be worth now. Is PS2 stuff collectible?

chris how do you have enough time to visit 3 thrift stores on your lunch break! I usually end up spending upward of 1 hr. in each and every one I go through.

I guess if you go everyday you pretty much get a lay of the land quick and can spot new stuff easy.

SWEET FIND, Chris! Make me a sequel to Final Fantasy Tactics. :p

hehe..... im about 5 minutes away from the thrift stores. sooo.... drive real quick, hit the first store and be done in about 20 minutes, the second store done by 30 minutes, that gives me the last 30 minutes for my last store and drive time to get back to work quickly :)

it is kinda nuts, but i have a few "lines" that i take and go for it. sadly, i know most of the employees by name, even the regular customers too.

gibbous..... i will get steve right on that brand new final fantasy game! i think he really needs one more project to work on. chris

It wouldn't sell for the same price as it did in the past, however it's still very much sought after by collectors and the like. The PS2 had a number of interesting development models, the one you have is the most powerful and the rarest as, as it has been said already, it was what the developers used for designing games. At the very least what it means to you as a gamer, is that the console is completely region free, meaning it can play European and Japanese games, it can play back-up titles without a modchip or a swapdisk, and can also of course play retail games. The VGA output is also really handy.

The eBay link that was provided is actaully for ANOTHER development kit called PS2 Linux which is as the title suggests, a kit for turning your PS2 into what is essentialy a Linux computer.
