I still consider myself new to the arcade scene, so I don't really know all the jargon or acronyms that seems to go around.

Any way we could get a sticky or something with some definitions?

Just as examples (I know some of them, but who knows, maybe what I think is wrong):

shopped, cps, jamma and various others.

There may be a thread like this out there somewhere, but why not have a sticky, so it's super easy to find? I know there are a bunch asking about individual terms, but I think they should be combined... like a dictionary, or legend

Well, I know there is a pinball acronym list but that is mainly becaues pin guys are lazy and refuse to write out the entire game name. I can help with these three though:

Shopped - meaningless word. In theory it means the machine has been thoroughly gone over and everything cleaned, realigned, and fully working. In reality it means that someone knows the lingo enough to be dangerous, most likely they touched the cp (control panel) with a rag with Windex on it once in the past year.

CPS - Capcom Play System. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CP_System

Jamma - Japanese Amusement Machinery Manufacturers Association. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jamma

Notice that the two links go to Wikipedia, it is your friend when you are trying to ID abbreviations...

Yeah, I frequent Wikipedia. I just think it would be nice to have it all compiled in one list, or in a sticky or something...

CP was another example... because there is a difference between CP and CPO (adding the O means Overlay, I'm told)

This is correct.

Every time I visit other forums with a sticky for newbs I find nothing but broken links and outdated information within those threads. They quickly become useless since the old timers don't bother entering them and they never get updated. The idea is a good one but doesn't really work in reality...

I agree, still struggling with most commonly used acronyms now as new ones seem to pop up daily.....

BYTM :)

NOS - New Old Stock
NIB - New In Box
SLT - (something i just saw craftymech say, but no clue what it is)
TPG - Test Pattern Generator
MMAO - Make Me An Offer
OBO - Or Best Offer
CL - Craigslist
PPU - Please Pick Up

WTB NOS or NIB CGA CRT (not VGA) monitor ASAP. I had a bad HOT 'cuz the SMPS on the PCB was DOA.
It's for my CPS2 not my DK, that needs an RBC not RGB monitor.
I've had good luck with G07s and K4900's but YMMV.

LOL J/K, FYI I'm a DIY guy. I do my own PCB, PS, and CRT repair.

My favorite from my days working in the IT sector:

PCMCIA = People Can't Memorize Computer Industry Acronyms

Shopped came around from operators, because when you had a game like say Mortal Kombat 4, you would pick it up and take it to another location to rotate games.

If the game broke, you would fix it on location usually, but kind of half-ass it sometimes if you didnt' have the right stuff (wrong joystick, etc.)...

"Shopped" mean that you picked the game up, and took it to the shop to have it worked over to get back to as good of shape as possible... instead of just moving it to the next location.

So it used to mean something, but it was subjective depending on what game it was and how much it was screwed up in the first place (like if the sideart was ripped off, they weren't going to replace it even if they DID take it to the shop)....

So in the way it's used now, it's basically meaningless.
