thoughts on doctor who

I loved the show old and new ones grew on me. I played it back in the day at a UFO furniture store and I just had to own one. Since then it was my grail pinball. Fast forward to 2009 and I finally bought one. It is a simple pinball once you learn the rule sets and has great replay value. I am probably being partial to the game because I love the Show so much. My friends love the game play and the mini video game mode compared to the other pinball's and arcades I have.

This is what makes it difficult to recommend the game. Alone, without the theme, most people are going to find the gameplay slightly above average. Good, not mind blowing or deep. If you get the theme, then the total package gets better. If you've seen the show and you're a fan, of course it then gets way better (the total theme is REALLY well done with this pin).

My opinion is that it is a must own *for me*. The gameplay isn't Simpsons PP or LOTR deep, but it's still very well done. Some of my favorite pinball designs are like that. It's why I gravitate towards older Steve Ritchie stuff (Firepower and High Speed in particular). There isn't a ton of depth because the game doesn't need it. The objectives are fairly straight forward (lock the balls, hit the time sequencer thing, kill Dialecks, hit the ramps for sonic boom/millions), but the choice of Doctor at the beginning of each ball can totally alter how you attack the playfield. It's simple, but clever.

I'm also a fan of the old show. I never set foot on any continent that could be considered a part of "Europe" either. I just happened to catch it one day on a local PBS in California and got hooked. Obviously I am glad the pin didn't wind up to be a total stinker. :)

I actually thought Dr. Who was popular in late 70's and early 80's(Tom Baker era) in the states here. Granted, not as popular as England but I did think it did take when Tom Baker became the Doctor. I do recall seeing som Jon Pertwee episodes back then but if I recall when it got to the states here we were a couple years behind compared to England...

I do like the Dr. Who pin. Sosage pretty much summed it all up as far as gameplay. I do like the changing the doctors strategy even know I didn't who did what. Awesome music and cool Dalek voice calls. That being said if the Dr. Who theme wasn't applied here I do think the pin by itself is a notch above mediocre...

If you do get one make sure to get the "moving" Dalek topper....

i think i'm probably gonna pass on it. i do enjoy what i've played of it virtually, but i'm just not sure the long term fun factor would be there for me.

oh well, there's always other pins out there! :)
