thoughts on this pin? i see it's ranked in the top 100 over on pinside. i never saw the tv show, so the theme isn't something that really appeals to me; however, i have played this one virtually and while i wasn't a huge fan my first few games, once i got the hang of what to shoot for it sort of grew on me. i know of one locally that i can play in person and it's for sale.

anybody here have one? good? bad? what about long term replayability? is it one that you can just pick up and play, so to speak (as i have people over to play pins from time to time)? or is it one that casual players are gonna shy away from?

i really dig the multi-level playfield thingy in the middle...very much a pinbot vibe. i think the video mode is pretty cool too and, for whatever reason, i like the speech (it's kinda plain, but oddly satisfying. lol).

thanks fellas.

I've played it multiple times. Pinbottish ....... I agree. I am also not a fan of the show so the artwork means zero to me. I find it simple and fun. I guess I can only say is you need to ask yourself if this games rulset is challenging enough to make you want to come back for more or will you be able to beat it on almost every game you play when you fully understand the rules.

I have one and I really enjoy it, I have never seen the TV show either but I still picked one up without knowing anything about it. It took me awhile and like most games once you learn the rules and can make the shots I think it's enjoyable but for the casual player I don't think they would like it so much about all they will do is hit the time expander start multiball, rinse and repeat.

how long have you had yours? i'm curious about long term replayability (not that i couldn't sell it down the road if i tired of it).

i have four pins now: who dunnit, jurassic park, gilligan, and star wars....the only one of those four that may leave my collection down the road is gilligan (and i kind of doubt it will...casual players love it...it's probably my wife's favorite too). wondering how doctor who would fit in with those...

I compare it to Dracula (bsd - not playability) I personally think it's a tough game like Dracula. When you have a bad game it's really bad and when you have a great game you walk away from it just amazed with how much fun you just had. I have had it probably going on two years and I don't have plans on getting rid of it unless I have to fund another purchase and out of my pins it will probably be the first to go. Personally I think it would fit well with what you have it is very different from what you currently have, the bad thing is I think it's going to take more than a few games at the sellers house to determine if you like this one or not but like you said you can always sell it.

I always thought that was a weird theme for them to do. Dr. Who never caught on in the states, mostly because it is VERY British. (No offense, but I lived in England for almost 2 years and there is a significant difference in humor and entertainment.) Im sure they were trying to target European markets with that one.

so i'm gonna put you down for a "no, don't buy it" then.... ;)

Whoops, not what I was trying to say. I have no idea how good the pin is. I was commenting mostly on the show and wondering why they used that theme. I think the pin looks pretty cool actually. But I am super pin hungry right now.

i was just effing with you.

i just cued up some of the early episodes of doctor who on my streaming netflix on the 360...gonna give it a watch tonight. also set up the first season of the new reboot of the series in case i can't stomach the old ones. figure if i'm gonna give this pin a serious look, i need to at least watch the shows once.

as for the part in bold: me too, dude. me too. i thought getting my who dunnit recently would ease the hunger, but it only served to make it worse. i'm a little bit afraid that the fact that i want a new pin so bad may be influencing my judgement....but again, i can always sell it if i buy it and it's not a keeper.

I like DW pin, I am a fan of the show more so the newer episodes but growing up always remember the show on TV.

Yes its a simplistic pin as such with hit the ball up the middle to get the Time Expander going, but is a very challenging pin with a decent rule set and some good modes etc to build up the scores. If you do not know the show then the sounds and that are going to be lost on you and I think will make the game less enjoyable, everyone that has played the game loves it and wants one!

Has a good video mode, sounds and good, of course the Dalek Topper, cool if you can find one that moves! mini playfield that rises and lowers is neat, someone recently told me was designed by the same person that did Pinbot and can see things that are similar, in my opinion a real sleeper pin and one that is often overlooked compared to other games of that era

have one in my shop now, working on it for a customer.

its a pretty cool pinball. not one im going to go after for my personal collection but i'll enjoy it while its here.
:)

loved the show, not a fan of the newer version but i havent given it much of a chance

Tom Baker years were awesome!!! When I was a kid, my dad and I watched that every night on PBS for years. No Brit here...and Dr. Who was awesome (haven't seen the new series outside of the premier several years back). Have a few of the series on DVD and can't believe how much came back 25+ years later.

In fact, that just gave me an awesome idea for a freaking awesome HyperSpin front end intro -- The old Dr. Who intro and theme music.

Anyways, great pin in my opinion. I would suggest at least playing it on pinMAME first to see if you like the flow/physics.

i'm a HUGE believer in trying a pin virtually before putting it on "the list." obviously, pinMAME/vp isn't the end all be all for pinball, but IMO it gives you a very good idea on playfield layout, the types of shots involved, the sounds, light show, and overall "general feel" of the game. i feel totally comfortable in going after a pin that i have only played virtually...granted, i'm gonna try it on the real table first if possible, but i think the virtual route can give you a great idea of what to expect and what you'll likely like/dislike.

i bought two of my four pins based at least partially on the virtual version...gilligan's island (also for the theme) and who dunnit (had only played it virtually before buying but LOVED the virtual version and LOVE the real pin).

anyway, as for doctor who, i have played probably 10-12 games virtually and i do think it's a fun pin....but i'm a little afraid i may be too eager right now as i'm dying for a new pin. that's why i wanted to get some thoughts from the community before i went to "stage 2" of the process. lol.

I had one for awhile, it was pretty fun, kind of similar to Pinbot with the middle locks. I love the sounds of the Daleks screaming in multiball. I sold mine, wasn't the hugest fan really, but it's not a terrible game by any means, just not my cup of tea. I have pinball a.d.d. though, I get tired of them, trade em/sell em and try some other ones haha

lmfao. fortunately, i do not suffer from this affliction. i typically get a game home and do not want to part with it....only problem there is, i need MORE room....and then, MORE MORE room. :)

i dig the daleks sounds in multiball too...not sure why...they SHOULD be annoying, but i think they're kinda cool. and i love the whole pinbot-feel of the middle multi-level playfield. i'm just not sure i want to go after this one or not.

to be honest, i'd LOVE to add a bram stoker's dracula to my lineup next...i love that pin...i'm just not sure the theme is gonna fly with the wifey (we have three kids, all 5 and under). but really, other than the images on the playfield/backglass, i don't think it's that bad as far as "vampire" stuff goes....there's only a couple of DMD animations/sound clips that might be frightening, IMO. granted, that opinion is greatly skewed by wanting that pin in my collection. ;)

BSD is pretty sweet, it's not a game for beginners that's for sure. I love mine, but nonpinball type people don't really get into it. You have to be able to make your shots to start multiple multiballs which is easier said than done ;)

I'm actually thinking of trading my BSD, told you I had pinball a.d.d. I also have space constraints, I really only have room for 3 in the house, and a couple in the garage, so I like to fix them, play them, get new ones, and the cycle continues...

My keeper so far is FishTales, prob my fave out of all the pins I've had so far, and I used to own Addam's Family, WCS94, Dr Who, Getaway II, to name a few, so that says alot. It's the perfect balance of rules and layout and difficulty I think. I'm also an avid fisherman so the theme appeals to me.

i'm NOT a fisherman in the least, but fish tales is a fantastic pin, IMO. the same dude that has the doctor who has a fish tales that he was gonna let go for $1K, but the playfield was (is) all effed up. i was gonna go for it and take a chance on a repro-playfield being produced, but i got cold feet.

BSD appeals to me because A) i love vampire shit (and BEFORE all this "new moon" crap, daggumit!!! :) ) B) it is a fun pin, and C) i'm looking for one now that is "not for the beginner" (even though i like to have pins that casual players can dig). the multiball stuff is way cool, the playfield layout is very nice, and the theme, again, appeals to me.

i've stated before on this forum that i'm a BIG "theme" guy....BSD is a movie that i love and a theme that i love. so, obviously, i'd love to have one someday.....the only obstacle is gonna be the wifey.

not holding you to anything, but what's your opinion on this pin with regards to the little ones? i mean, i could forbid them from playing it, but my two oldest (out of three) kids love playing pins. is it really all that "scary"??? seems the most scary part is the lightning bolt sound/DMD image after you drain....

I have an 11 year old, it's not really that scary. In the end it's just pinball, but wifey's approval is also important haha. There actually is a family mode in the settings that turns off a few of the animations and sounds as well.
