Thinking of gettng out

Lets just say its time.
Other personal issues add to it, but im just not into it lie I used to be. It sucks cause im still in the middle of building the game room and getting that all situated as well.
I realize selling 34 games at once most aren't going to be able to afford. I MAY break them up in lots if I can get them all gone - and of course achieve the number id like. however this still kinda becomes an issue with having to sell all the extras individually as well as multiple listings sales, etc.
I just want it to be done with all at once. I dont want to sit around for months watching this slowly go away.

Well sir the best of luck on your endevours, sad to hear you want to get out! but if you change your mind about selling the whole lot, I wouldn't mind taking your Toobin and Qbert off your hands! :D

I'd say just take some time off from the hobby like many people have said.If you sell off all your games, you may regret it.Not only that, but if you ever decided to get back into the hobby you'd be back at square one which would suck.

Definitely interested in the Q*Bert.

If you want to sell that as a stand-alone sale, I'm VERY interested.

I've gone through several periods in the last 15 years where I get busy with other things and don't play my games for weeks or even months at a time. But I always come back to them. So don't be in any rush to dump your entire collection just because it hasn't consumed your time lately. I think you will regret it.

I agree with the others.. give it some time. There comes a time to just step back and take a breather. I use to collect 1/64 scale toy trucks way before I got into liking arcade games. To this day I still have over 200 toy trucks. About 5 years ago I sold a lot of my more valuable trucks because I "thought" I wanted out of the hobby. The hobby stalled out and all of my old friends that I spent some 10 years plus talking to and building close personal friendships with moved onto other projects. It just wasn't the same as when I first got into the hobby. I ended up selling about 100 or so of my favorite more valuable trucks because I thought it was all over for me as well as the hobby. I to this day regret that decision. Although it went years without any real step forward, eventually the toy truck hobby got back almost to its old self. 2 new diecast companies were introducing new trucks, and a lot of my old friends came back to the hobby and started enjoying it all over again. Tonight for the first time since March of 2009, I visited my old toy truck forums. It brought back a lot of good memories. Some of my old friends even still visit them. It's going to be great to finally talk to some of them for the first time in well over a year. Just doing so has made me want to go back to the hobby as a side hobby. :) I guess what I am saying is you can do whatever you want but deep down take some long hard thoughts about what you really want to do 6 months or even a year from this day. :)

parabolic, even if you're really serious about "getting out" right now, at least keep a game or two that will keep you busy during your retirement years. At least keep the Tempest and Gyruss.

I've gotten out of collecting a few times. The last time I sold off all my stuff and didn't own a game for nearly 10 years but one day I decided to get back into it.

It's no big deal. Go for it.

Dont sell them all!

Give it some time

There are several that are not easily replaced and I think you will deeply regret selling.

Besides, how will we keep testing my game boards? =)

Hey brother-

I've got to put a +1 to this.
If you don't need the space and you don't need the money, go throw a tarp over them.

Give it a rest and go do something else for a while.

Several times I have thought I was squandering my time messing with all of this and considered giving my garage to my wife.

What else would I be doing? Working more? Watching TV? Reading? Yardwork?

Just go cover them up and give it a month or so.
Don't make any sudden moves.

I hope that other things are going OK with you.
Come down to Columbia with Bryan and you guys play some games. There aren't as many here, but it's fun for a breather.

Kerry (and all)
thanks for the support. Its kinda about the money, the time, the dust, but mostly family/personal issues. Bryan knows what I got going on. I realize I may be making a mistake, but - at the moment I have other things I need and need to work out first.
So the offer still stands.
$15k is the magic number - breaks down to about $441.xx a game. roll the extra cost from a not so great game (my working karate champ in a Joust cab) - lets say $200 into another nicer popular game - say Q*bert - $644.
All in all it should balance out. I would accept an serious cash offer in the close range. Again, this also includes spar boards, monitors (2 working vectors), parts, etc.
so there it is.
Thanks!
Jeff

Getting out seems about as hard as getting into the hobby. I know it can be a hastle moving games one or two at a time, but perhaps arranging pick up days and times would help with the chaos.

Essentially people have to agree to pick up games at these times on these days or loose their deposit. This is how I will offer up my games if I ever get out.

Good luck, I'd still keep a couple of those.. Remember when you got into the hobby, that is probably what you wanted to begin with right?

My 2 cents...

Here is my 2 cents..

I already have alot of these games..And I feel several are worth a good amount..Example,
Journey( seen them sell for 1500 to 1800 )
Marble Madness( 800 to so maybe since its complete)
Wacko ( actually never seen one, has to be pricey)
Tempest and Tapper ( 1800 for pair )
Multi williams and Sinistar with jrok ( 1500 maybe for pair )
Tron ( 1000 )
There is 8 games that I feel like is worth half of the whole lot....Taking into consideration that they are minty which I have a feeling they are.....And Im also saying I feel like this lot is worth 12 grand....
And again Im really not interested them..Sure there is a few I would love to have but again my 2 cents.....And there is no way in hell I would sell my Journey or Tron or Wacko for that matter.
I feel like 15 grand's not so far off.......good luck man.....

Btw is wacko a fun game or just a cool collectable??????

Wacko wasn't a huge success for the same reason so many other games aren't... It's not really much fun. It has a unique control scheme and CRAZY cabinet, but it wasn't much fun to me back when it was new. You would need to find someone really LOOKING for one to get a decent amount for it.

So, what kind of actual SHAPE are these games really in? It truly is the difference between the asking price being reasonable and being a bit on the high side...

There are people who can afford that on this forum but the problem is half the fun is the hunt rather than buying someone else's collection.... If I were you I'd post it on ebay and see if you get any interest. Best of Luck.

Another option MIGHT be to see if another collector will sell them off for you. Since you don't want to deal with the pain of selling them off one by one, perhaps you can have someone else do it and give them a small commission or something. But logistically that will be tough as well. Unless you know someone locally who you trust enough to come and go in your arcade and handle all that cash for you.

In any case, good luck. It's a hard decision to make.

$15,000 is a subconscious sabotage number. You see this a lot. He really doesn't want to get rid of them subconsciously, this is a way to keep them but still feel like he tried to get out of the hobby. Can't blame him. Who'd ever want to get rid of that collection.

I can understand that you have a lot of games that are hungry for parts, and therefore money, but keep a few of your favorites. Not the games that would be worth the most during resale, but your favorite games. It's sad to see another long-time member here bowing out. The only way I can make sense of it is that you have too many games that need too much attention. Or two many projects. Thin it out, and you'll be happier. Sell the games that are easy to play in Mame.

If having some of them "not perfect" is eating at you, just step away from the hobby for a bit and DON'T SELL. I ran into the same thing with my console stuff...I thought everything had to be complete with the box, pristine manual, and game. I closed the door on it for a bit, didn't sell, and came back to it months later to find that my collection was great! Sometimes you can't see the forest from the trees, ya know?

You've put years into the hobby, you are still playing the games (ie TP '84), you still like what you're doing deep down. Maybe you want to do something warm and fuzzy with a cheap game or two. Put an ad up on CL for a well below market value game and see if you can bring someone else into the hobby. Connect with some local arcade friends, maybe?

Best of luck.

Why not put the whole thing for sale as a lot on Ebay with a BIN of $15k?

This might attract a legitimate buyer, either domestically or overseas.

Couldn't hurt to try.
