Thinking of getting a juke...

ah so much better when you only have to answer for yourself. no time limits. unlimited budget. it's epic!!!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
everyone has their likes/dislikes/tastes/genres/top40 bullshit/boring rock&roll/country/classical music.
i however go against the grain any and every chance i get by purchasing anything but mainstream, which makes it a tad more expensive.
i prefer shit like stoner rock, psychedelia, synthpop, industrial, ebm, noise, vintage jazz, foreign stuff, 1980's hip-hop, rare alternative, and obscure music
My jukebox only gets turned on during our Christmas party or rare weekend that we go downstairs and play some pinball. The selections are to please me and whatever crowd may be present.
While we have this thread open, what 45 based Jukebox would folks recommend that is (1) reasonable to find (2) reasonable price and (3) reasonable to maintain.
Yeah, I could search but since we are talking about it....
I've got a Rockola 470 that has been running strong for 45 years. Jeremy of the basement arcade and John Exidy both have this model juke as well. I've seen others on Facebook over the years, but they seem to be pretty reliable, they're good looking and they sound great.
I would recommend trying out the Jukebox life before making a purchase.
Load it up and see how a dedicated music selection device fits your needs. This is a very cheap approach and if it's awesome for you guys, make the plunge for a heavy large dedicated machine or a wall mounted/more modern solution :)
The worst part about owning a jukebox is moving it.
yar and what sucks is sometimes these 45's don't have the jukebox hole and u have to special drill it ffs. it sucks!
For that favorite song specifically, there are online shops that make one off 45's for pretty reasonable. $25-50, depending. Just throwing it out there.
Edit: Nevermind, just looked and it seems it's only 12", couldn't find a 45 service for cheap :( And to be clearer, 33rpm is all I can find, no 45 rpm. I think when I was looking to do this, I saw 7-inch and thought it was 45 rpm, but I think it's 7inch 33rpm, which...sucks.
The worst part about owning a jukebox is moving it.
I think the initial maintenance is a beast for some people too. I have not owned a jukebox, but I have helped multiple people get their's going :)
You just proved my point. Jukeboxes are plentiful. If you pay $300 for a working jukebox, I would say that is top of the market.
Prices must be highly localized. Broken (non-collectible, but attractive) Jukeboxes go for that much where I'm at. Some rare, specialized ones sell for $4k in 80+% working order. For the most part, clean+working jukes around here are more expensive than I'd pay for them.
A friend just picked me up an NSM CD Wall-Hanger as a 'thank you' for helping him repair one of his jukes and a few machines. He paid $500 for the 80%working + a parts machine.
Tyler's Jukebox Emporium in Ottawa appears to do well picking up/fixing/selling these things. I like thumbing through his FB page to check out his pics. https://www.facebook.com/tylersjukeboxemporium
Jukes can be fun if you don't mind repairing them. For me, repairing and filling them with music is a large part of the fun.
I've had jukeboxes in the house my entire life.
All of them have been seeburg select-o-matics. (M100b/c/g, KD200)
I love the select-o-matic mechanism because:
  • It's beautiful to watch play
  • Unlike vertical carousels, it doesn't scratch up the records
  • Very compact + can store up to 200 records
  • Not terribly expensive
  • Extremely well documented
My current project is an apparent prototype KD200 that belonged to my parents. This one does NOT match any wiring diagram I can find. It's like someone stuck the guts of an unidentified jukebox into a KD200's shell. Sadness.
But most aren't like that. 😇
These look really cool (I know ZERO about jukes). I really like the machines however that look vintage and where you can actually see how they work.
The Rowe 80-91 series has been good to me.
The Rock-Ola R-95 and under are also very affordable and works like a charm. Anything post R-95 are CD turf.
The Seeburg classics get into pinball $10K+ pricing, so fuck off with those.
The NSM Prestige ES-160 line is titties <3 those to death, so sexy.
Disagree on Seeburg classics. Just bought a fully restored Seeburg 100 G for 4k. Absolutely gorgeous. Also got a B some years ago for like 1k ish?
Some people do really overcharge though. But the most expensive ones are the trashcans for whatever reason and the VL200s, but even those you can find pretty cheap if you're willing to work on them.
Where do you find these? AKA what is the KLOV of jukeboxes?
My Kd200 sitting on the project line... Beautiful jukebox with the Cadillac tail lights.
There's jukebox addicts forums, but buy/sell isn't terribly active on there, but the knowledge base (particularly Ron Rich) is pretty damn good.
As for buying, FB marketplace, craigslist, and ebay are your best bets. These things are heavily dependent on people clearing out their grandparents houses unfortunately.
Arghhh Facebook...why oh why....
Anyway, love this video
This is the look I like (50's feel, can see the records, etc.) - I likely now have fallen in love with the most expensive option...
If you're feeling particularly adventurous, there's a lot you can do with them. I wired my Mom's Seeburg so that it plays music throughout the whole house, no wallboxes needed.
I'm trying to figure out if I can make an IOT "wallbox" to remote play on mine from my network...
