Thinking of getting a juke...

Depends where you get your records.

Record stores I expect to pay $1 or more for 45s. Online $3 and up plus $3-5 shipping. Quality is usually good.

Flea markets and yard sales I expect to pay $1 or less for 45s. Often you can get a bulk box of several hundred for $5-$10. Of course selection and quality are not as good as record stores.

Watch out though. I've got way too many 45s that I bought a handful (or boxful) at a time at the flea market…

Phil
You just proved my point. Jukeboxes are plentiful. If you pay $300 for a working jukebox, I would say that is top of the market.

To what others have said, my understanding is that a large number of CD jukeboxes have parts that are now impossilbe to find. Most 45 jukeboxes from the classic era have parts around or much like the classic gaming community people have made certian parts and pieces.

here's a short list of rare 45's (there are 1000s) that i very much doubt anyone on this entire site, let alone the world, own:

Sex Pistols - God Save The Queen (1977) (only 9 survived out of the 25k copies), almost priceless, but have been known to sell for $20,000 USD+
The Beatles - Love Me Do (1962) (only 250 copies made), worth $15,000+
The Rolling Stones - Street Fighting Man (1968) (the copies WITH picture sleeve sell for $18,000+)
Madonna - Erotica (1992) (if picture disc has her sucking on toes, it's worth $3,000+)
The Quarrymen - That'll Be The Day (1958) (only 25 copies made), worth $10,000+
Nirvana - Love Buzz b/w Big Cheese (worth $3,000+)
Brute Force - King of Fu (unknown value)
Gorilla Biscuits - Gorilla Biscuits ($100~300+)
Wings - Love is Strange ($100+)

There is a guy here in Lincoln that has a hoard of jukeboxes. I can buy complete non-working jukeboxes for $100. There is no demand for me to buy any more of these and be able to turn a profit.

not to mention, jukeboxes weigh 300~400lbs which is 2x what an arcade game weighs. they are so heavy it's not even worth it anymore.

I worked on a 45 juke once. Got it working - it was gummed up with old oil and grease.

The records had been played so much you could see through them. They were wobbly.

i only have a handful of expensive 45's (what i consider to be an insane investment of $10~50+ per 45).

jimmy smith - the sermon [$5~$15+]
darkness of evil - laid back funk [$30~$50+]
Teater Poëzien – Pulp [$10~$15+]

I've had my 45 juke for nearly 20 years now. And when I bought it, it was nearly 25 years old. It still works great, and I still love looking for 45s and changing them out. Do I have a couple of duds in the collection? Sure, but I also have a ton of good to great ones. I'm a big Cars and Eddie Money fan, so I've got a ton of those, a ton of Michael Jackson, a ton of Prince, a good collection of Loverboy, Outfield and tons of new wave and Britpop. I've also had a couple of rarer ones over the years including Metallica's Breadfan/Stone Cold Crazy and Alice In Chains bleed the freak live. Anybody saying that 1970s 45 Jukeboxes are worthless are jaded fools.

I had to order my "Sugarcubes" "Hit" from Europe. I just had to have it and could not find it anywhere else.

are you referring to the metallica 45's as two different 45's? becuz breadfan was ONLY on the "eye of the beholder" 45:

stone cold crazy was ONLY on the "enter sandman" 45:

Kind of the same thing as the "Pac-man fever" 45 I have. I bought the Italian release because on that one they released it with Pac-Man Fever on the A side and Froggy's Lament on the B. I think we only got ones with either an instrumental version or "Do the Donkey Kong" on the B

I try not to buy really expensive 45's. They are going to end up in the jukebox and get played.

i do. it's addicting. and some songs are simply not found for $1. they will cost you $10~50+ per 45 sometimes. it's how life is.
I listen to mostly mainstream stuff. Looking through the $1 bin is also fun. I am given a time limit when we go out looking. Otherwise, she gets cranky.

ah so much better when you only have to answer for yourself. no time limits. unlimited budget. it's epic!!!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
everyone has their likes/dislikes/tastes/genres/top40 bullshit/boring rock&roll/country/classical music.
i however go against the grain any and every chance i get by purchasing anything but mainstream, which makes it a tad more expensive.
i prefer shit like stoner rock, psychedelia, synthpop, industrial, ebm, noise, vintage jazz, foreign stuff, 1980's hip-hop, rare alternative, and obscure music
