Thinking of Building an Upright Arkanoid

-I have been working on an artwork package for this game, should I finish it?

-Can another acceptable name for Moobs be 'Fritz Titz'?

Why would you do that??? A million good games were converted to Arkanoid, and still are (and are waiting for someone to convert them back). Just get one of those for $50, clean it up and add a sticker or two. The world REALLY doesn't need one more Arkanoid.

Am I the only one who thinks it is in poor taste to pay homage to....Arkanoid?!

I mean come on, that kit single handedly destroyed thousands of classics.

Phet, what kind of message are you sending to the tens of video game restorationists that look to you for guidance? Please dont waste your skills on this project, finish up one of those classics in the gayrage instead. Hell, find and restore a Breakout, it's the same damn game.

I think you're art package looks great. I'm getting ready to replace my CPO because the generic Romstar one looks like ass. If you do this, I hope you'll make it available to the community. I'd buy a set.

My Arkanoid is in a Super Pac cab. It looks pretty good next to my actual Super-Pac. If I were you, I think I'd try to find a cabinet that matched one that I already had multiple ones of. Centuri cabs would probably be good too.

Phet did you ever do one of these? Oops that's not the first time he's been asked that...

I just picked up an Arkanoid in a Zaxxon cabinet. Thinking about keeping this cabinet or swapping to a different one like a Taito cab. Either way, I want to do new art and clean the cab up really nice. Are your art files available? I'm trying to figure out what I want to do with it and will probably do something custom.

Also Nephasth, I LOVE that CPO. I never liked CPOs that are so generic they don't match the actual control placement. I was thinking about doing something similar but changing the "brick" layout somewhat. Thanks for the inspiration!

Good timing on the thread resurrection...I have an Arkanoid board I pulled out of a conversion that I've been thinking of scratch-building a cab for. I didn't want to dedicate the space of a full-size cab, but I thought a Taito Trimline reproduction would be nice for it.

Yeah I saw that artwork. Very cool. I want to do something similar with probably the same bezel, but a CPO "less busy". I want to carry down the larger blocks like the CPO shown, but don't want the big logo in the middle. Figured it would be a good CPO for me to learn how to use Inkscape with. Always wanted to do that!

Phet do you have any vector art or larger art files you feel like sharing?

Honestly Arkanoid is a fantastic game. I've wanted to get one for years, and it happens to be my wife's favorite arcade game. Collected 20 years and finally figured I'd better get her a game she likes.

I also bought Arkanoid for the NES when it was first released with the special paddle controller. Fantastic port!

I'm still trying to decide what I want to do with my cabinet. It's a Zaxxon cabinet in great shape. I'd like to move it to a smaller cabinet before I begin working on artwork and such. I just posted a FT thread offering to trade cabs if anyone wants a Zaxxon cabinet.

I have a Revenge of DOH sitting in a Dynamo HS-1. My long term goal for...like...ever...has been to turn it into a multi-Arkanoid (Arkanoid, Tournament Edition, Revenge of DOH). Too bad Arkanoid Returns would require turning the monitor.

The ultimate set up, for me, would be a cocktail version. Problem is, I don't have any cocktail friendly spaces for that.

Anyways, +1 the love for an awesome series. Like Street Fighter II, people have a real hard on for hating on Arkanoid because it was used to convert old dedicated cabinets. A lot of people are purposely missing out on great games to spite their face...or something...that's how that saying goes, right?

I picked one up a few years ago in an Atari cabaret ( I know, I know, I didn't do the conversion) and it was nicely done.

Needed a little cosmetic assistance (t-molding put back in, etc.) but it wasn't a good form factor and had a 19" monitor. Sold it to a co-worker who LOVED Arkanoid.

He still has it.

This thread is awesome. I recently purchased an empty Dynamo HS-1 with Arkanoid in mind. Im thinking of putting all the Ark. boards in the cab. I really love the artwork you have done Phet. I have been able to find the CPO and marquee, but have had no luck in finding your wonderful monitor bezel. I will send you a PM about it. Awesome work. Reading through this post made me smile.

I'm going to build essentially what Phet was going to build. I have found all the art I need but the Arkanoid monitor bezel that's pictured in this thread. Unfortunately for me Phets high resolution file for the ark bezel was lost in an unfortunate drop box accident. I'm hoping one of you guys was able to grab the high resolution version so that I can have it printed up for my 1st build. Thanks guys.
