You know the deal, on craigs shopping for something you shouldn't be buying and you find something else and...

I'm thinking it's a pacman, it's been painted and converted to a video pinball.
Solid wood, haven't opened the rear yet, coil mech works since you have to use it to give the machine credits.
Monitor when off show a light pacman burn.
Cleaned off the tag with goof off.

I've been looking for a project cab (ya i like i need more stuff to work on), would like to bring this one back visually to a pac if that is indeed what it was. Maybe use a multipac in it.

Paid $150, had to drive like 10 miles to get it. Price was firm but with as few that come up close and gas being $4 a gallon, i figured what the hell, took it.

What do you guys think?
Don't be afraid to be honest, i would be.
Will the control panel and pinball pcb have any value?

That's kind of an unusual conversion. Does it work?

This is the perfect candidate for a 60-in-1 - it's already been painted and converted. Would be a huge amount of work to restore to a proper Pac, the multicade route would probably be best.

Or, you know, keep it as the pinball thing if it's a good game.

Post some pictures of the inside, no doubt the wiring is pretty hacked up.

The pinball works, not something i'm interested in though.
Regardless of what i use it for, i'd like it to at least look and play pacman.
Don't think i want to do a balls to the wall perfect restoration, but i'd like it to look decent.

Oh, and the paint looks like crap.

Yup, that's definitely a Pac-Man. I'd say you did pretty well. It looks like a good restoration candidate, especially if you can get the black paint off without damaging the original paint underneath. You'll need the marquee, bezel, PCB and probably a wiring harness, but I think it would be worthwhile.

(Holy cow, 1000 posts!)

That is 100%, without question, indubitably a dedicated Pinball Action.

I don't agree. The yellow, the Pac-Man CP, the cabinet shape...it was a Killer Instinct.

*squints eyes*

Y'know what? I was wrong. It was an Eight Ball Deluxe pinball. :D

I just got done doing this very thing. Even taking the easy route it took me 4 years to go from this:

Here's the inside, no clue what it's supposed to look like, but i'm guessing with all the cut wires, this is NOT it, lol.

Yeah... that metal cage, the switching power supply, the electrical tape... that's all not supposed to be there.

Although, the original Pac-Man power transformer and edge connector are all still there. Despite the extra wires and parts that have been added, it doesn't look too horribly hacked. Of course, looking inside the coin door or control panel will tell the rest of the story :)

On the plus side, you have the power supply you'd need if you wanted to convert it to a 60-in-1. You also have the transformer and edge connector and much of the wiring you'd need if you wanted to restore it as a Pac.

You are halfway home! Looks like almost the whole wiring harness and both transformers are still in there. You just need to reconnect the correct wires. They even left the edge connector on there for you. The other parts you need (PCB, Marquee, Bezel, CP, stencils, paint) are all easy to source and fairly inexpensive.

WOW!

if the monitor works, $150 seems reasonable to me.

That CP is crazy! WTF is that box??!?

Its a good project and just about everything you'd need to get it back to pac is available.

Good luck!

I opened the control panel and that crazy box has a 4x4 square cut in the original panel. Little much of an overkill just to run half a dozen wires through.

Ok,
So i need:
A control panel (not sure this one is worth saving, no joystick, wrong buttons, huge square hole cut in it)
PCB, I read about a dual pacman board with pac and ms pac, is this still available somewhere? What are my pcb options?
Marquee.
Bezel, is this with the glass or can i reuse mine with like an overlay?

Are the ebay harness's for pac and ms pac the same? If a harness is only $10 (i could be wrong, never bought one) would it just be easier to buy one and be done?

Thanks for any insight
Joe

Pac-Man and Ms. Pac use the same main board. Originally Ms. Pac had a daughter board that plugged into the Z80 socket, but you can simply change out the ROMs on a Pac board. It's also pretty easy to modify the board to play both games, selectable with a switch by using larger EPROMs. There are also various multi-kits that provide menus.

The art is screened on the back of the glass

The harnesses are the same. But you already have one. It would be a lot easier to just patch it up. Also, people generally try to get a lot more than ten bucks for an original unhacked harness...

Ok thanks Ian.
Only reason i was considering a new harness is because i thought it would make it easier to work on, considering i didn't take it apart or do this to it and i really don't know what belongs and what doesn't.

So when i pull out this pcb, the cage goes, the pcb goes and so does the harness connected to it?

Also, so i'm looking for an original pac pcb? Are reproductions the same?

Pac restore...

60 in 1 the cab. Easiest thing to do (unless you are a purist and want it 100% original).

Start with a Jamma Harness and the 60in1 board for around $100 total. That cab already has a power supply so that could save you $25-30 if it works.

You can find a control panel in the wanted/for sale sections here pretty fast. Guessing $30 for a used one.

Leave the marquee or replace it. Up to you. The 60in1 plays many of the classics incl pac, ms pac, galaga, etc.

:0)
