THE Strangest problem I have EVER seen

There has to be a way to make that bill unit work in that position... Either add a spring to the bar, move the optical sensor, extend the length of the tab that breaks the beam, etc.

But yeah, that's a really steep angle. I was envisioning it mounted on a vertical plane like on a soda machine.

A spring "may" be the only way. The problem is it's a plastic bar ( has no real weight to it ) that opens and closes the rear optics. So when it opens, gravity keeps it from returning to it's original postion. You are right with the spring idea, it may work, but it would have to be a spring that would push the bar back down. I'll see what I can come up with, maybe not all hope is lost for the HSV-300.

Thanks.

Can you "modify" the bar on the acceptor itself in any way?
(I'm not familiar with those models)

EDIT: You guys beat me to it the idea.

There's a little bitty coil spring in the shutter mechanism of a 3 1/2" floppy disk. Perhaps something like that, on the gate lever shaft, one side attached to the frame and the other on the gate, could give it enough pressure to return to the home position.

I modified the top of the bill unit to "hold" a spring. I'll install it later and let you all know if it worked with before and after photos. Stay tuned.......

Ok. Spring idea was a NO - GO. There are actually 2 sets of optics in the rear of the bill unit with 2 separate actuators. I can get a spring on the one that has the plastic bar on it, but the other one which is deeper in the bill unit is impossible to get a spring anywhere on it.

Going to install the APEX 5400. That one you can put upside down if your application warrants it.
