When putting in a new flyback, should one always start with it as low as possible? Is that CW, or CCW What happens if it's too high? Can excessive "screen" cause damage?

Usually the Screen being turned too high just means a really bright picture. Left too long it COULD cause an overall burn-in. If you have a weak component of your horizontal section, the overdrive may cause a problem, but it's not very common...

Thanks. The screen went green with raster lines and appears to have lost green shortly after tweaking screen. I only moved it from about 11 o'clock to 1 o'clock, but I figured I'd better learn what it means and how to initially set it if I'm going to be replacing flybacks.

start low. then gradually work your way up. if you wanna get it dialed in right, turn your Brightness pot and Contrast pot to like halfway, then leave the screen adjustment a little under where the screen is at normal brightness, then start doing your Brightness/Contrast adjustments.

you want your Brightness to have a little bit oopmh left in it beyond the comfort zone, and your Contrast should be up just enough to where you don't have any bleeding colors. you'll particularly notice green streaks coming off text. and your Brightness you want up just enough before black backgrounds start showing up as like a dark brown, you want to not be able to "see" black. :)

Fully counter-clockwise is all the way down (no picture will show). Generally no higher than 9 o'clock is ever needed.

No way your screen control is going to make the green go in and out. If you're getting raster lines with the green, that are green colored, that's the green gun in your tube shorting out. A rejuvenator may be able to zap it back right for you.

Great... I knew it wasn't color specific from it's location in the circuit. Not knowing exactly what it did I wasn't sure if I could (and possibly had) overdriven a section.

Now that I know what "screen" does, I'm going to let this thread die so as not to start a second repair thread for this same monitor. If you don't mind, read my description of what's happening and tell me what your read on it is.
