The return of virtual reality

I never believed it was the tech that hindered the adoption of VR.

I think people just don't want to wear shit on their head.

VR

This is the future whether you choose to buy it or not. It is coming folks. I believe we will see in next gen (xbox 720, PS4). I for one am very excited. I almost bought a proto.

I might have jumped on one if I'd known about it while the KS Was going on. I've always wanted VR to be good, but everything I've ever tried was lacking in some way or another. I'm tempted to preorder a dev kit now, even...

At least they seem to have got the weight and size down.

But every 3D headset I've ever seen still has the fundamental issue of being headache/fatigue and vomit inducing, when mounting stereo screens that close to your eyes.

Maybe I'm missing something here, and someone please set me straight if I am... but what is the difference between this headset and all of the previous ones that have been tried and failed? What is improved now over previous efforts?

I used to think these would be cool if combined with Wii/PSMove/Kinect... but then safety becomes a concern; flailing around without being able to see your surroundings is never wise.

I dislike being the dissenting opinion, but I don't see this going anywhere. I think VR is still a 90's fad that just has never been thought through well enough to be successful.

Also, I think those DevKits might be just for game developers to code games with. Consumers who donate at that level may not be able to do much with the unit. At this point I will just wait and see what happens, but my expectations for it are rather low.

Cool idea? Oh yes!
The future of gaming? Doubtful.

I don't think you watched the video. It is clearly explained why others failed and why a special someone...named Cliff Bleszinski...endorses it. Why so doubtful? Why aren't you hopeful?

I watched the video that was on the Kickstarter page yesterday, if that is the one you are referring to. It didn't do anything special for me, mainly for the reasons that I outlined in my previous post. It was filled with people saying how great this device is, but no-one saying exactly why it would be better.

Please don't misunderstand me here, I love the idea of V.R., but I also think the execution of it is still very wrong. The technology still isn't where it needs to be to pull this off properly.

Do I know what the right way for V.R. is? Not really. But for me personally, this still isn't it. I think something similar to the 3DS, with no extra glasses or headsets is the path to go down though here. Mostly because for me, headsets are uncomfortable to wear, and I already wear glasses, so wearing two sets simultaneously doesn't really work.

From the video:
  • Stereoscopic 3D-rendering
  • "Massive" field of view (110° vs 30°-40° of other consumer VR headsets)
  • Ultra-low latency head tracking (no lag when compared to others)
  • Low cost; available to average consumers ($300 for the dev kit)
Unfortunately, this is one of those things you can't see/know without actually trying it.

It is already here. Behind close doors. Someone is enjoying some awesome game play. Get excited.

Now THAT did get me excited. And I notice the video was uploaded in 2007, I'm surprised that Nintendo hasn't done something with it yet.

So, everyone who has a Wii essentially has V.R. equipment sitting in their living room already, with just a little bit of work.

Add to that a nice wide HDTV and surround sound, and it could be quite impressive.
Thanks for sharing that.

I'm now picturing Punch Out where you actually duck and shift to avoid punches, and a zapper game where you actually crouch behind cover and can peek around corners.

There was a thread about that back in 2007 when Johnny first announced that. Unfortunately, no one ever jumped on it :(

However, the experience isn't as great as it might seem. It might have been cool if any real games had ever utilized it, but I don't even think there were many homebrew games that used it, though it's been a few years since I was into all that.

Regardless, Johnny Chung is awesome :)

Ugh VR, I love it on paper, it seems like such cool stuff. The 90's cabinets were awesome looking and exciting to see in an arcade, they stood out from other arcade cabinets. In actual practice it's a terrible idea though, for me at least. One would think I would be a huge fan of the 3DS and while I like the system I I just don't use the 3D feature since as soon as I look at it with the 3D on I get instant eye strain and headaches. I was dragged to a 3D movie once and lets just say that is an experience I do not want to repeat ( it was very very bad) Regardless this tech isn't good for long term use. Not to mention the early 3D arcade games also had the ability to make you nauseated and sick, better keep a garbage can nearby!

I believe this is another animal. It's poised to revolutionize the video game industry. Some very big names are watching it's development. This March the first batch of developers kits will be shipping out. Exciting stuff ahead folks.

P.S. I'm not a fan of the 3DS. This screen kills my eyes. :(

Thankfully all the 3DS games can be played with 3D off just fine, I never have turned the 3D on but for a few seconds on startup, on my system and I am enjoying it just fine.
