The rarely seen blue first screen maze on Ms Pac Man

I just fired up the Ms Pac after a hiatus, and got the blue maze on the first game. I had forgotten about this. I know that when I dropped a lot of quarters into the Ms Pac back in the 80's, I would get the blue maze once in a while. Is there are rhyme or reason for this screen appearing? It is only for the first screen, and if you die, it goes back to the "standard" first maze color. Of course, I am sure almost everyone knows that.

If a credit is inserted at the very beginning of the attract mode, before the red ghost appears under the marquee, the first maze of the game will be colored blue instead of the normal maze color.

Probably why you didn't see that maze much in the field BITD. More than likely you coined up at some other time.

Try it, you should be able to reproduce it.

Here's a page describing all kinds of pac bugs:

Exactly, I do it all the time, works everytime. I love doing it in front of people for laughs.

Thanks guys for the info, and the link. That article has some interesting tidbits. I have never noticed the pink pellets or the discolored maze.

koolmoecraig, I agree about reading about stuff like this. It is just as fun as playing the games.

Is there a list or links somewhere of similar occurrences in other games? I would like to read about it, if there is.

I have never really been a Ms. Pac fan...but now that I own one...and spending time playing it...iit is growing on me. Figuring out how to get perfect score on first maze...learning how the ghosts move. Its becoming challenging and fun!

I am somewhat glad I wasn't the only one that was unaware of the trick...

If I had saved each quarter I spent as a kid on Ms Pac Man, I would have been able to buy one of my own. That's why I had to have it for my arcade.

14,600 on the first maze is perfect, if my memory serves me correctly. After a while, you can get an idea of what the ghosts will do, unless they pull a reversal on you.

I played Pac Man Plus on my 60/1 the other day, also. I forgot how much fun that one is, too, with all the little curveballs they throw at you.

Like a lot of things, just a cursory glance of the game completely misses all the cool deeper stuff that's in there. Learning the ghost A.I. is one of those cool milestones.

I watched a video on YouTube showing how to beat first maze with perfect score...of course the guy takes a hit of weed before he plays....but it was pretty cool how he was able to control the ghosts...even getting them stuck in the upper left box going in circles...

The ghosts stay blue for quite some time on the first board, so you can pretty much get a perfect score without using any strategy, as long as you make sure all the ghosts have regenerated before eating another power pellet. 14,600 is right. 29,200 after the 2nd board. There's a site somewhere dedicated to the point totals of a perfect game.

I try to get past 80,000 on 1 pac before the intermission before the banana board. Then I'm pretty much a lock on a 150,000+ score.

Ms Pac is my all time favorite game. Too bad I'm not very good at it.

Ummm....150,000 is pretty damn good to me! Farthest I have gotten so far is the fifth level...haven't seen the third maze yet! High score only 39K....:/

I can get to 50k on slow and 150k on fast.

Pac: Slow. Otherwise it feels stupid.
Ms. Pac: Either but I prefer fast.
Jr. Pac: Fast is the only way to play.
