The Psycology of Low Scores

But Williams did get out of hand towards the end when a short game would run into the hundreds of millions (like attack from mars). That is too much.

Don't forget the Billionaire's Club in Bride of Pinbot ;) .

There's a video on youtube of someone trying to get a perfect 0 on pacman, which is a bit harder than it sounds, since if you do nothing, you get points.

It's in mame, but here it is.

LOL! That's hilarious.

I have a scoreboard up, and lower scoring games like Berzerk and Phoenix look odd next to some of the others where going over 100,000 isn't really a feat.

I don't mind it when taken on their own. Berzerk is low scoring, but the method of scoring is so elegant (points for each kill, a bonus for killing them all) that I wish more games did something similar.

The whole high score craze started with Rock-ola's Nibbler (go look that high score up). While talking with the guy that programmed Nibbler, somebody asked him about the crazy high scores. He just looked at them and asked "Why be stingy. What do those points cost you? People seem to like them, so if it doesn't cost anything and people play your games because they get lots of points, then it's a win - win."

pending the game I go for how far I can get on a quarter. Then if its something that can be completed I go for score. I have been into shmups lately and thats my strat for those. 1cc, then score.
