I have Williams High-Speed pin a non-fliptronic system 11, had some friends over a few days back and one of my friends kept stalling the ball on the flipper "up" for a long time, I told him he's gonna burn out my coil, Am I correct or is it a myth? My friend said thats how he played pinball since 1974 and never seen a weak or burnt flip, he states thats the way to angle and aim your shot. Could the coil get burnt while stalling the pinball to make a shot? I really dont want to baby sit my friends when we have gathering to make sure everyone is not stalling the ball. Thanks for your help.

The flipper coils are actually two different windings. One is for lifting the flipper and the other is for holding the flipper in place. The hold winding is designed to be maintained long enough to aim your next shot. As long as your machine is wired properly he will not burn up a coil holding the flipper up.

Holding the ball to line up a shot is one of the most basic strategies of pinball play. I suggest you learn how to do it well.

As others mentioned, the machine is designed to be able to have the flippers energized. The Flippers have two windings on the coils (why there is 3 lugs) the windings are for the stroke and hold. As long as your end of stroke switch is adjusted and working properly you will not burn out the coils, or blow fuses.

Ok good

Ya were in our mid to late 40's so were not kids, and holding the flipper up for a shot is how I play where pinball machines are displayed like pizza parlors, etc. So it wasn't mine, but once you own a machine you dont want to ruin anything because it is actually something you purchased. The company in which I purchased the machine did tell me NOT to hold the flipper up to aim shots, he said the coil would burn up if you do hold the flipper up.Thanks for the responses.

Hmm, it's a little concerning to me that someone selling pinball doesn't know well enough that holding flippers up (for a reasonable amount of time) is perfectly fine. Trapping is essential to anything above the most basic level of play.
