The Official Sega Slimline Thread

So this dedicated Sega Slimline Frogger popped up in Michigan yesterday on FB marketplace. My buddy tried to buy it to use in his annual coin op show but it sounds like it became a bidding war for the seller. Oh well. Really nice looking game. Just goes to show you they are still out there!
That art is fantastic 🐸

$500 woulda been a steal for such a rare game in the US.
I love that they didn't put a 25c sticker over the yen coin slot; they rivet a metal 25c plate onto it! (mine has that too)

Thanks for posting!

Would love to buy a slimline Frogger if anyone has one and is open to selling. Please pm me, I am in Ventura, CA.

500 all day. Anyone know who got it?

Ugh. Screw that seller.
They also had it on eBay advertised as a fundraiser for the Southern Michigan Amateur Radio Society.

I was watching it for a while, then they sent an offer. I accepted and paid for it, and was excited for a road trip. I was making travel arrangements, but then they cancelled it, said it was already sold, and ghosted me. Why send an offer to prospective buyers if you already sold it?

I rarely leave negative feedback, but it was sketchy and dishonest, and screw that asshole. 🙄😒

Just brought home a white Frogger today that I think I like more, but I really love these slimlines and was willing to drive to Michigan for it. 🐸😥

Dumb question: does anyone have the head on 2 roms for the slimline or can point me to which mame romset it is? The slimline version used a vertically oriented monitor, but the roms I could find are either for the horizontal orientation monitor or the ones with invinco which runs on VIC dual hardware.

Headon2.zip -> horizontal oriented
Invho2.zip -> vic dual head on 2/invinco

I need just the vertically oriented ones.

GREAT question! I have the slimline but have never removed the ROMs to upload them.
Lets see if anyone else has them already to email first, and I can be a last resort.

They are likely 2708s, if you need help dumping them I can assist.

Bumping this topic, still looking for the ROMs for these. It would be very cool to have the vertical orientation version of head on 2.

Should be relatively trivial to just take the "switching" part out of the ROMs.

The 2 games are pretty well segregated in the ROM set, with HO2 in the low half and Invinco up top.

Bizarrely, there's actually screen "rotate" logic built into the code, that mangles logical addresses in to screen addresses -- also handles cocktail flip.

(Unflipped) Head On 2 runs with $00, while Invinco and the start menu run with $03.

Hack complete (works in MAME at least).

As it turns out, it only required changing 25 bytes in ROM "271b.u33"
I do have one question: can it run on original head on hardware? Or is it confined to Vic Dual? Pictures I have seen of this were running on head on/vic 8 rom boards.

It's based on the 16x2708 set, so no, it won't work on 8x2708 boards.

...but you can restrap the boards for 2716s easily and run it as an 8x2716 ROM set...

...or just get plugin for the 6502 that eliminates the ROM on the main board.

That metal base looks suspiciously like the one Monaco GP cabarets use, though I couldn't tell you if they're the same dimensions or from the same supplier. I'd love to see a set of plans and/or CNC files for these cabs get made, they're rare as hell, really cool and probably work great for head-to-head games while not making you have to sit down to play them. Not having to account for chairs they also probably take up less floor space.

I was typing out the same thing! 😅
I've been trying to figure out how to build one too.

The Sega slimlines and the Monaco GP cabarets both seem to use 2-3 different kinds of diamond plate with different treads, so guessing they used multiple suppliers for the metal.

The wood base looks similar on both cabinets as well.

The glass corners & brackets look the same as Sega cocktails, so measurements could likely be pulled from those.

What bugs me is can't figure the taper running down the cabinet. Is there one, or does it just look like it from the pictures? Seems like that could be tricky to determine without a cabinet to take measurements from. Do the cocktails have a similar taper in the upper woodgrain part of the cabinet?

And I've read they use the 16" monitor used in Space Firebird & Carnival cabarets? Can't confirm though. 🤷

Anyway, would love to build one of these since they're so hard to find! Such a cool cabinet.
