I've seen a few threads, with little discussion. Let's make this one the BIG thread.

What do you regret doing/buying/selling/ruining/etc in this hobby...??

I doesn't matter what it was, it just has to be hobby-related.

--------------------------------------------

Bought a machine you wanted because an ex-gf or ex-wife wanted one?

Sold a machine without thinking, then missed it so much you paid 4x as much than you should've to get it back?

Shill bid someone on ebay just to keep THEM from buying it, because they've been a d**k to you in the past?

Put an LCD monitor into a machine you dreaded ever wanting to do so prior?

--------------------------------------------

Fess up, KLOV'ers!!!

My biggest regret thus far:

Buying a Centipede and showing it hardly any love. Playing OR restoring it...

I don't have anything, BAD to share, really.

I regret trading the Asteroids Deluxe my Grandparents gave me. It had been sitting in there basement my entire childhood and its what got me into collecting. Of course because they are gone its a serious ache when I think about it. STUPID ME.

This recent thread was fairly extensive: http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=138911

Though, if it's just anything and everything, I regret entering a CL deal where the seller basically showed up with waterlogged games. I ended up with some parts and a monitor in the end, but was thinking I was getting a steal of a deal on 2-3 complete games. I've been a little more careful and haven't had a poor deal since.

Giving away an asteroids cocktail I got free about 20yrs ago. It played blind and at the time I was too busy with life to learn arcade repair so I gave it away, as did the guy I gave it to. Three owners, no love...

Early on, passed on an Exidy Star Fire cockpit in nice shape and a Gottlieb Spirit pin. Probably could have gotten both fairly cheaply.

I bought out a retiring operator several years ago. There were a bunch of old parts a box marked 'clown stuff' , so I cut stuff out of the wiring harness, threw away the power supply, and almost tossed the monitor tube - until I recognized it as a 23" b&w.

Fast forward about two or three years. I've worked my way through refurbishing all of the games I got from him. He had converted most of the classics, but kept all of the boards that he pulled, which made the job fairly easy.

I set my sights on a Wheels II and found out that it had been converted to a 25" color monitor, switching power supply, and some smoked plexi for a bezel.

After digging for parts and finding some pics of the internals, I find that the 'clown stuff' I'd been using for spare wire, power supply, and several other parts were all of the stuff I needed to put the Wheels II back into working condition.

So I regret butchering up the wiring harness and tossing the power supply to the game I'm currently working on (and am now searching for parts).

When I got the cabinet to restore to my Frogger it was a mess (wiring was for Crazy Kong, no marquee, unknown CPO). I happily was restoring it to Frogger when I found a tag amongst the junk at the bottom of the cab.

Before becoming a Crazy Kong, it had started life as a Pulsar. That unknown CPO I had stripped off a few days before I found the tag... was from Pulsar. I don't know how many Pulsars are out there, or if the game's any good, but I feel bad for destroying that CPO.

I should have sold it to someone who needed the CP, and bought a different CPO to use for my Frogger.

Destroying my first two cabinets when I was in middle school because the monitors stopped working. $5.00 cap kits now...

Buying my Die Hard arcade cabinet. Got a good deal but once I got it in the house I was like "ok, what now?" I turned it on once to play it that day and since then it has sat dormant. Control panel can hold a bunch a random stuff stacked on top of it, though!

Buying artwork from your bitch of an exgirlfriend haha, never getting it and never getting my money back.

ROFL!!!! Seriously, I know eh??

Yikes dude...that one sounds rough.

I've actually got one that tops my original:

I sold my original NeoGeo 4-slot MVS I worked my ass off nearly 10 years ago (well before I considered this as a hobby) for only $200. I was moving on to college and regret that everyday, now especially I want one again. :004_ssleepy:

Passed on a Asteroids deluxe and Frogger for $300.
Passed on HUO Star Castle, Eagle, Qix UR's and Hellifire CT bulk buy for a crazy low price.. but that was okay because Lostarcade picked them up for his museum.
Bought a $*00 Pac-man with Ms. Pac-man
Bought a $500 48 in 1 board from 2-bits.com Then putting 48 in 1 in a Pac-man cabinet (Upside to all this was that I enjoyed the extra games, Like Pengo, Gyruss, Qix, DK3 and Lady bug.)
Spending 33% more than I should to purchase half my games.
Keeping a jamma Dragon's lair cabinet. (Does anyone in Tucson want one for $20/Trade/Free!?)
Posting in this thread.

Don't forget about the trash man that took one of your cabinets :)

I regret overpaying for the first few games I bought several years ago and then giving several of them away a few years later because I didn't have the room for them.I haven't come across any of those games that were in as good of shape as the ones I had. (Double Dragon,Capt.America,NHL Open Ice)

I convinced a CL seller that one of my "grails" was not worth his asking price of $275, and that it's only worth $150. I was tied up for 2 days and I said I would swing by in a couple of days to pay for it, pick it up. That night he re-listed his CL with my price of $150 and BOOM it sold from underneath me within a few hrs.
I WAS PISSED! Not just because I lost out on my grail, but because he used my lecture against me. Bastard.

Oh, I've got a really good one...

Years ago, back when parts for XY color Atari monitors were not readily available, I had found an operator who had AT LEAST 5 complete and working Atari vector monitors that were sitting on the shelf and pulled from the various games still working. They told me that they would be sitting there, waiting for me, and whenever i needed one, they would let me have them for $50 each. Since they assured me that they wouldn't sell them to anyone else, i figured that they would be there for me whenever i needed them.

My MISTAKE is that i told a fellow collector about them, but didn't tell him WHO had them, just what (Large) city they were in. He did some digging (without me knowing about it) and went there (a three hour drive) and picked up EVERY SINGLE complete monitor and ONLY left partial units or parts. Fast forward a little while. I need to fix either my Space Dual or Tempest (i forget which), so i call them up. He seems quite confused about why i am calling. He then tells me that my "friend" had already come down to pick them all up. I was like "what do you mean? You told me that you were holding them for me!". I bet you can guess his response...

"He indicated to us that he was picking them up on your behalf. As if he was getting them for YOU!"

Needless to say, I lost all faith in humanity that day. i hope that there is a special place in Hell for people like that guy...

Son of a bit....those are pretty bad. The grail story must hurt, but the burn on the vector monitors has to still be in ya. Especially it being FIVE of them...
