The official "Found on the sidewalk / trash / landfill"-thread

Today was a crazy day. I have bought a KI2 for a friend as a birthday-present and we decided to pick it today.
After we arrived we spend like 20min to load the Midway-cab

and decided to make a ride around the building as it was a very nice, old industrial-venue

As we bent around the corner I saw something I recognized in milli-seconds.....

I came closer and saw that it is realy true....

We took the thing out the trash-hill (it was very light) and put it on a wooden pallet to check it from all sides.

I was not sure what to do with it but of course I dont allow it to be scrapped....so we put it next to the KI2...the Midway-cab secured the bike in a perfect way...so everything was perfect.

Since some day I got a new storage, which is good as the old one was kind of full....

I would like to know if you also ever found games somewhere since you are collecting and what games that was?

Since the it is an empty shell without monitor thats also missing the base, and since there are some metal-bars that go through the shell I am sure it was used on a karusell for children to ride on it.

Coolest wall hanger ever !!!

Paging Bill. Paging Bill. We need a ruling on this!

well, for the simple minded, it could be a teachable moment. you see that building in the background, it has a door. Don't enter the door. Don't use a crowbar to open the door and then say it was open. That's called breaking and entering. Even if the door is open, that's still illegal entry. stuff inside a building would still be private property. So that would be B&E and theft if you took something out. I hope that clears it up for those without morals.

We don't have complete details in this case. The guy was there I assume to pickup a KI. Maybe he asked if the stuff outside was junk and the operator said yes feel free to drive around and look. Then it would be ok. But if you were there just to get the KI, and after the guy left, you drove behind the building, saw it and took it, well that's probably theft.

If its on the street in front of the building and it has a sign on it saying free, your welcome to take it. Even without the free sign, Something left out in that manner, could be assumed to be abandoned. But if its in a front yard , or in a driveway, you need to ask before you take it. It could be his cats scratching box, or his kids play statue. If its on private property your not free to take it.

But If you driving around buildings and going through gates to get it, then its probably theft. If it was in the dumpster, or right next to it, its reasonable to assume it was abandoned. If its next to the door or in his carport. Its not reasonable to assume it was discarded, It would be considered theft.

Maybe the guy took it out to repair or paint the shell? Maybe he need room in the shop to fix the monitor or paint the body? You don't know. In this case, based on the pics, I would call it theft. I looks like someones private parking area. The guy has probably $200 ramps right next to it. there is a power cord stretched to the area and its near what I would guess is $500 in batteries. I would have knocked on the door and asked. If no one was there, I would have left a note and called it a day. The KI was a nice pickup, no need to be a thief. Hopefully the OP knew it was intended to be free. If not, you really should go back/call and ask. But when you do, don't lie to the owner and say you found it out front.

and to answer the OP original post, Yes, over my 30+ years of collecting, I have been given numerous free games, I remember a battlezone, hard drivin, pole position, space tactics sidown, a poker machine, juke box, cranes, a pitch and bat game, and even a few rough pinballs. Not to mention piles of parts. One thing in common, I was either called to take them, asked before I took them, or drove to a listing saying it was free to take it.

I once bought a lunar lander off an operators loading dock. He was going to crush it. He had already pulled the monitor out of it. There was a dumpster right next to it and it was mostly filled with crushed cabs. I went in and asked. He said I could have it for $50(maybe it was $75). I paid him, and I still have that lunar lander. So never assume something is trash. even if you think it is, there is a chance its not. Sure the operator, probably was thinking sucker and took my money. Maybe so, but I would never steal it. But Later, I got to know the guy, and he was cool with me. We got a few games for mame thanks to him.

Haha, you should ask him about that Lunar Lander, was it going to be trash? Did he think you were a sucker? Would be funny to know.

I guess the pic below kinda belongs here as the trash man "Found it on the sidewalk / thought it was cool trash / and it ended up in the landfill"

By posting it again, somehow this Tempest lives on...

I never asked this was probably 25 years ago, jim past away a few years ago. He was an old ex sailor when I met him. He ran a route that stretched about 2/3 of California. In any case what I paid was irrelevant. It was his property, I wanted it, I bought it. We were both happy. I had all the parts to put it back together. I think a lunar lander for under $200 is a great deal!

But as I said in the past, its also a sad story. He had 2 exidy vertigos on that loading dock. He even told me, if you like those games, you should probably get these. If I only knew what they were. I saw them as 2 big monsters. I had no idea they were color vectors. I would like to blame matt, I think he was working for jim then. He should never have let him do it!!! Hell, matt probably did the killing. I think he told me he put the 6400 into the star wars cockpit.

Did you check with the owner before you grabbed that bike shell? :)

I would hope so.

I have a building in an industrial Park, similar to the back there in the photo. And people all week long try to drive around back and steal shit. I had 2 stacks of new pallets taken in daylight. Caught some piece of crap trying to steal an old coke machine out there. Claimed he assumed it was left behind because it wasn't locked up.

Thank you for the clarification Bill. You truly are our moral and ethical leader. And thank you for making up another "fact" about the game I took. I had not heard the part about where I used a crowbar or whatever to tear the front door down. That's a new one for me.

You asked for a general opinion on this situation, I thought you might need help grasping right from wrong. The crowbar was not directed at you and taking sundance, but I might help you with making future choices. Also, bolt cutters are a sign your probably stealing things. Driving a car through a door to make a room open is also wrong. I know its hard for you to understand. Maybe ask your kids if its right or wrong. Hopefully they have a better grasp of reality.

Also, I just noticed it in the pics, the bike was resting on a row of pallets with the batteries. that should be another clue it might have been something someone cared about. I would not call a row of pallets with stuff on it a junk pile.

Please... Just let it go. I don't have a dog in the who-did-what-with-Sundance fight so really don't care about what happened there, but this is now the second thread that's also completely unrelated to that entire saga that I've seen derailed by your need to comment on the OP's moral and ethical sense as you perceive it.

You are not in his shoes and do not know the complete circumstances in which he acquired this item, and it's frankly in incredibly poor taste to keep telling people how you would act without a full understanding of the situation that they found themselves in.

Thats my idea from the beginning.....unfortunately it is in really bad shape, the monitor-plexi has been smashed and things like that.

For hanging it on the wall it will be ok....it is very light also.

I think that's your best bet honestly. I remember someone trying to restore one of these because it was his "grail" game and he said it was next to impossible to find parts

Whats going on with the guy....does he talk about the find of the rare vector game in an abondened bar in the desert?

By the way, I did ask the wife of the owner, they have some horses there in a small area and I called over if I can have that. She replied, "no, sorry I think my husband needs the pallets" and I said "no, I mean that bike", she "what bike, is there a bicycle"? Me: "No, that plastic fake-motocyle, the rest of an arcade-machine". Her reply (meanwhile she went over to us "Oh this, it should be in the landfill since last week and I thought it went..., we are not permitted to store trash here, so if you want to save it you must take it now because as soon as my son is back the trash will be cleared. I dont want to have stress with the landlord again".

Well, maybe direct your message to John. In both threads john entered the threads and made a joke about it at my expense. I did not do that. I responded in kind. He then brought up sundance in this thread, I responded in kind. Actually in the first thread, someone else made a joke about John at johns expense and he took it. but then he used that to make a joke at me. Yes, it's all childish. Should I be above it, probably. But I am not the one who is starting it. I would say it's even more childish that John keeps at it.

Yes, i am not in the op shoes, I posted I do not know all the facts. I was not going to comment in this thread, but John dragged me into it. But based on just the photos, in the case of the bike, short of getting approval to take it, I would say it was stealing. It was not in a junk pile unless someone told you that was a junk pile. I am not trying to pass my morals on to everyone. But It just amazing what others do to get things. It's not that hard to do the right thing. If. It was truly junk, the guy probably would have given it to him. Maybe even given him the rest of the game. The last game I got for free, the cab was out without the control panel. It had free on it, but I still asked before I took it. They said I could also have the control panel that was on their porch. So doing the right thing paid off.
