Like you said, we haven't played it yet so it could be good. But there are built in problems with any new MK game.
Namely, MKII got everything right and the design team was still fired up about making the game. None of the sequels have been able to measure up because they're all uninspired. The lack of enthusiasm shows up most obviously in the fatalities from 3 onward. Some of the fatalities in 9 look like the team brought their A game, but a lot of them are tired rehashes that gamers have already seen over and over since the original MK. On top of that, with each release the marketing people go on and on about how it's the "goriest, bloodiest, most over the top..." game ever. After a while even the die hard MK fans check out in accordance with the "fool me once..." idiom.
Not that it's all the designers' fault either. The hype and draw of the game in a pre-internet arcade is much different than the draw for a console game that already has pages and pages of moves, fatalities, and cheats prior to release day. The mystery is gone.
