i pulled the WG K4600 out of my Venture today so i can cap it before the Seattle show next weekend and to my surprise the monitor that came out is in pristine shape. i've never seen one this nice in a working game and i'm pretty darn certain it's never been touched by a technician; i suspect it's never been removed from the cabinet before.

virtually no screen burn and a super-clean chassis even before i do any dusting... i almost feel bad doing the work but it needs to be done.

there might be a few other untouched K4600's out there but i doubt there are more than a handful.

I have one like that in my HUO(?) Pac-Man. It's a shame that it still has to be capped. I also have a 4900 in pristine shape in my Port-Man.

the exidy max-flex systems I have both have 4600's in there. both were home owned and saw very little play.. I am sure they have never been touched..

Which brings up a question... Should I recap it the max-flex monitor before I take it to cax? Monitor works great right now.. I am more of the if it ain't broke don't fix it camp..

I assume your recapping just to make it bulletproof. Is there anyting wrong with it??

Sure you should cap it. The electrolytic caps are 30yrs old.

i'm going to cap the monitor because it's got a skew to the right on the top 3" portion of the screen. not bad and it's still playable but i figure i've got kits so i might as well.

if it didn't have the skew i'd probably wait until after the show just in case i mess anything up; i don't have a spare working K4600 chassis to put in there and i'm running very low on any spare monitors.

Nothing wrong with mine, just preventive maintenance.

I'll bet there's actually quite a few virgin K4600s, because they suck to work on. ;) I'll put up with a mediocre picture from a K4600 (and those stupid Nintendo monitors) to not have to pull that chassis, compared to a normal chassis that's easy to pull and work on. Laziness is a powerful thing. :)

the only thing i really don't like about them is detaching and reattaching the HWC; otherwise it's not too hard to leave the flyback on the frame and roll the chassis back and forth carefully.

it's a project for another night as much of this evening has been spent piecing Top Speed and Bosconian back together.
