The KLOV Arcade Mixtape!

It's Tricky - Run DMC

About the time I was hitting the arcades, I was beginning to really appreciate Funk/Rap/Hip-Hop. It really could have been anything, my musical tastes are pretty wide-open... but I listen to a LOT of old school while working on machines.

Put me down for "Round and Round" by Ratt. It's quintessential 80s metal, plus the roller rink/arcade of my youth used to have a Ratt poster hanging up. Of course, this music was a little before my time, but its how I picture the decade I was too young to remember most of.

I have two that hit home for me.

Ah-ha take on me , and Peter schilling major Tom

You only get one, so I'm going with Major Tom. I'm sure someone's gonna suggest Take On Me. It's only a matter of time.

*edit* switching to Take On Me. The only versions of Major Tom on Apple Music right now are crappy remixes

1984 - Jump/Van Halen
1986 - The Final Countdown/Europe

I like both of these splashy tunes that fit the arcade era but I really can't decide. On one hand, Jump came out while I was knee-deep feeding quarters so it's more timely, but of course Europe's memorable song is so over-the-top cheese that it's deserving of edging out Jump. They are both saturated with that syth goodness that we know and love from the 80's.

For me it's really 50/50. Dave, give me some help here.

Two cheese classics! I'm giving the nod to Europe.

For the losers who have Google Play Music instead of Apple Music, I started a mirror of this playlist. It is called KLOV, so it is easy to find in a search. It is currently up to date through #32. It includes the Toccato song by Sky.

Sweet! Post the link and I'll add it to the original post.

Oh, and I added the Sky song. It's on Apple. I just spelled it wrong earlier.

I also swapped out Schilling's Major Tom for A-ha's "Take on Me." The only Major Tom versions I could find were horrible remixes.

I cant believe this isn't there yet, I cant hear this song without thinking of the skating rink/Arcade I used to go to as a kid. Its the quintessential 80s track to me, and even has a bitchen guitar solo. I admit it, I had a red pleather jacket with all the zippers on it, I thought I was so cool. LOL.

Michael Jackson - Beat it

Wow, this is a great list so far. I thought about it a lot and decided to choose from songs that I listened to a lot back in the day. The peak of the arcade experience to me were the summers of '80 & '81. I used to ride my bike to the Germantown (TN) Village Square Mall and play at the arcade there. That was my typical arcade experience. The Cars were without a doubt my fav band at the time, and I had all their cassettes, yes, I said cassettes. And yes, I would listen to them on my walkman all of the time it seemed - especially when jogging or biking to the arcade. But damn, how to pick just one Cars song???? The typicals pop into my head like Just What I Needed, Best Friends Girl, Moving in Stereo, Shake it up, Touch & Go, etc, etc, etc. I dunno why, but I get the feeling to pick something a little off beat. I was gonna pick Since I Held You, but finally decided on:

My choice
All Mixed Up - The Cars

Artist: Foreigner
Album: 4
Released: 1981
Song: Juke Box Hero

This was playing in our local arcade along with the roller rink. This stayed in the playlist for a long long time as I seem to remember.

"Dirty Deeds" - AC/DC - Because I remember this song playing ALL THE TIME at the local Roller City roller skating rink... which had some of the best arcade machines in the area as well. I loved the song (and album) and would mouth the words while either skating my ass off or playing my ass off. RIP Roller City... you are now a parking lot for a shopping center.
