The Hardest Control Panel to Disassemble

Omega Race cockpit n the background? I will have one of those some day.

Yep, that's it! We have a winner.

I finally got my Out Run panel back together last night. The biggest problem with Out Run is the little key that sits in the shaft to keep the gears in one position is really hard to remove. Combine that with the fact that a lot of these old assemblies are all gunked up with old grease and you have a recipe for frustration.

I took some pictures of the reassembly here:

I applied some Teflon grease and now this puppy works perfectly. Rewarding in the end but totally frustrating during the process.

Oh man, that looks terrible to deal with. Based on your pics and the one posted earlier in this thread, I'd say Out Run takes the cake so far as the worst control panel!

I think I just pulled something after I gave myself a pat on the back for waiting to buy a Turbo Outrun over the original. It seems like Sega simplified the steering wheel assembly, here is a pic from my mini:

I have not attempted to take mine apart. I don't think I want to do anything to it except some new lube on the gears. Lithium grease, I assume?

Xybots isn't bad at all, I do live in fear of original Assault joysticks though.

Arctic Thunder was a major pain in the ass and if you ever had to replace a monitor on the thing you'd be cursing the poor design of that thing.

The positive about going through all of the pain is my steering wheel is perfectly centered now and the controller is very clean! If you had asked me what I thought during the rebuild I would have cursed but now I'm rather proud of myself LOL :)

Oh great. I have an outrun sitting in the garage awaiting my steady (not) hand....
