Trying saying oscilloscope without feeling like a total nerd. After over 15 years in the hobby I figured it was time to pull the trigger and get a Tektronix 465B. Now I just need to learn how to use it.

I want to get one sometime soon as well! I haven't used one in almost 15 years (my degree is in electrical engineering but I do strictly software now). Nice score Dave!

Nice one... I finally got one a week ago... Next up a Logic Analyzer :) Oh and a Desoldering station, ESR Meter, Flyback tester, CRT Rejuv'r... It's a long list...

When I was maybe 10, one of my favorite toys was my dads scope. Which explains a few things about me actually.

Oh my freaking gosh!!! :adore: I need to get one. Where can I sign up!!

I am supposed to be getting one. Guy at work cleaned out a house of an electronics guy who passed away and asked me if I wanted the stuff. Says they are a bunch of component parts (transistors, caps, etc.) and test equipment. Says he has a scope, LA, and more. He just wants to keep the multimeter and some old stereo stuff. ;) Can't wait to see what I get.

edit: This is why you need to let people know you are into this stuff. He was going to take everything to a local college or Goodwill till he remembered I collect electronics. You never know who might come across something so be proud to let people know you collect. :)

I read this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oscilloscope and I still don't know what that is other than it helps to adjust/troubleshoot CRTs. Shows you how much I know about electronics. But it looks really cool. :D

An oscilloscope is a tool that allows you means to graphically view and measure voltages and electronic signals.

One of the best things I've done in the last few years or so is finally investing some money in better test/repair equipment. It started with buying a quality Fluke multimeter (model 12B which only cost me $50) to replace a cheapo Radio Shack pocket multimeter. Since then I've added a temp controlled soldering station, crt rejuvenator (built 3 adapters for it also), and just today I received my desoldering station. I've also owned a logic probe for a few years.

Agreed, money invested in test/repair equipment pays off in the end. I've had a Fluke 12 for years and love it, ditto logic probe and audio probe. A good soldering station is a must as well.

The difference is night and day when I think back to what I used to have. I'm hoping for similar results with my new desoldering setup.

'scopes rule. I bought one a few months ago during one of the periodic government lab cleanouts on EBay. Now I just need to spend some time with it.

The downside is that they are just not as portable as a logic probe...:(

I just got a B&K precision scope model 1470 Oscilloscope for free from a neighbor that's moving.
Saw him bringing it to the curb. I knew what it was and it was in great shape so I snatched it up. He said it still works. Apparently he used to fix radio equipment until 10 years ago. Don't even know if it's right for testing CRT monitors. I have no clue how to use it but it's there for the day I want to learn!
