The First Coin-op you hated

Street Fighter II - I couldn't stand the 1-on-1 game play, the limited (only twelve or so) poorly animated backgrounds, and the short games (what do you mean I lost in two quick rounds????). I avoided them for the longest time until they started to grow on me. I was a lot more of a fan of beat-em-ups like Final Fight, TMNT, Aliens vs. Predator and others like Aliens, Out Run, Turbo Out Run, Strider, etc. When everything became a 1-on-1 fighter in the arcades, I stayed away and turned to home consoles.

I've never heard of that game. But I do think that a Jerry Springer-themed Street Fighter game would make a killing in the arcades...

It is definitely not that cool. For the curious:

I just couldn't stand the gameplay. It was torture for it to be the only arcade machine for 30 miles around growing up. Hated playing it, but I agree with you. I've never seen another one since (20+ years ago).

SF II and all the clone fighting games that came after. I had great disdain for them at the time. But now I think they are kinda cool even though I still suck at them.

Dragon's Lair. It was the biggest sugar coated rip off when I was a kid. I remember it costing $1 a play and with those unique video animations, sounds and the cool looking cab, what kid wouldn't want to try it out? One of the biggest mistakes I ever made in an arcade. Though, it would be cool to own one now. You just have to pay for all the credits up front. :)

Joust, no doubt. Never could get the hang of that fn game, and it never did jack shit on the route. Had a cocktail model and back then there was nothing suitable to convert it to. Business was good at the time, so I gutted the cabinet and junked it just to make room in the shop. Who knew I would live this long?

Dragon's Lair. 50 cents and I didn't understand how to play. You don't really play it as you don't control a character on the screen. I didn't get that it was a timing thing. If you miss your chance, you just die. Pretty disappointing for a 7 year old.

Add another one for Dragons Lair. I hated to drop a dollar for that damn game especially after waiting in line to play. Seems like I waited longer in line to play than I actually played..haha

Now it is the gem of my collection...no more lines..lol

For me, I can distinctly remember a few games that I HATED back in the day. For the most part, I can't think of anything today that I outright HATE, mostly 'cause I haven't been screwed out of a few quarters in years (Arcades are few and far between in southwest Florida, much like in most of the US.)

Joust - I was never good at this game. Always got my ass beat.

Street Fighter II - Oddly enough, I didn't seem to learn any of the moves for SF until I was a lot older. I was never a huge fan of fighting games when I was a kid, mostly 'cause all the technical stuff was beyond me. No matter who I chose, I'd always get beat. And if I won a first round, I'd get beat in the second and third. Screw Vega. He was the worst.

Golden Axe - This was really due to the cab that I played it on. I played on a cab that was in my elementary school's recreational center. It always took a while to get a game going, 'cause we'd have to use something to get credits without paying for them because the coin slots were busted. On top of that, the buttons stuck. I grew to hate the game 'cause I'd always mess up due to the buttons. Now, I really enjoy it. But I know the Genesis title more than the arcade one right now.

I too hated joust (alot). But had to comment on Golden Axe, this was at a Kwik Shop in Lincoln, NE and we played it all the time, it was the first game I actually beat on location. Of course, if you have enough quarters anyone could beat it.
