a few people had asked me about a picture of the CarnEvil i picked up recently... finally got it inside last week after making repairs and stuck the new locks on today so i suppose for now it's complete. i've been wanting a shooter of some sort for a while, something with a paranormal theme (Chiller, HotD or Zombie Raid would have done nicely as well.)

this came from the Tilt arcade in the SuperMall in Auburn (WA) for $195. the screen was dim and out of focus (hence the cheap price) but it did run through the attract mode so i figured it was worth it if for nothing other than parts.

turns out my guess was right and it needed a new flyback (and i did a capkit at the same time.) it also got a rejuve to make it brighter and a new marquee light fixture and now it looks pretty darn nice and plays great. it has some nicks and dings on the side and the CPO, the shotguns were replaced with pistols and there are lockbar holes i haven't fixed yet. ah, well, the price was right and i can't expect perfection.

despite the advice on the Tilt website to essentially walk in with cash and be ready to take it right then and there i had to jump through several hoops and have the machine inspected by the regional manager before they would sell it. took almost a week after my initial inquiries before i could go get it. i was seriously disappointed when one popped up on the local CL for $1000+ a couple of days after i'd first asked the arcade about this one and i figured someone had already picked it up, made repairs, and was flipping it. i guess i got lucky and that hadn't happened.

the extra tall screw in the middle is there so i can hook a bag over it to put the guns up in. not only do the cables take up an extra almost two feet when the guns are in the holsters but it keeps it all up where my 2 1/2 year old son can't easily grab 'em. we're not ready for him to be playing such graphically violent games quite yet, despite his repeated insistence that he wants to play Mortal Kombat and NOT Centipede or Time Pilot which MK is sandwiched between.

darn new-school gamers just can't appreciate the classics.

Very nice.

I was at the Supermall once, before I started collecting.

Didn't even know that there was an arcade in there.

yeah, it was about $250 total after parts from Bob.

the dip switches are hot-glued over so i couldn't easily switch it to free-play mode, so this became my first cabinet to get switched over to tokens.

nothing like struggling to put two tokens in the cab while the CONTINUE? screen counts down...

oh, and it had 140k hits on the coin meter when i picked it up. i'm pretty sure those are pretty much all genuine since the game spent it's entire life up until now in Nickels & Dimes arcades. that's about $35k in revenue in 10 years.

the Tilt is new within the last two years. there was a mini arcade with a half-dozen games over next to Marshall's on the corner near Johnny Rockets before the Tilt opened up, but i never saw anyone in there.

Tilt was actually pretty busy on the Saturday i went in to pick up CarnEvil, and not just the redemption games were getting use. they had a Ripley's pinball not too long ago but it's now gone and they did not get in another pin to replace it. the SPBP at the Sea-Tac location also disappeared within the last year.

Cool. Will need to swing by there sometime. Do they sell their games regularly?

all the Tilt locations put their games up for sale sometime in the fall, hoping that some will sell for Christmas. the prices are pretty darn high on a lot of their cabs but a few are reasonable (there was a Daytona USA twin in decent shape for $795 at the Sea-Tac location,) and a very few broken ones like this are fairly cheap.

AWESOME. Glad to see it up and running. I was in there (must have been a week before you bought it, prob the week you were waiting) playing some Area51 and looking at that cab. I remember being in there a few times before that and wishing the monitor was working so that I could play the game.

Nice score and a great job fixing it up. :)

Wow, you got a steal! I love CarnEvil, such a cool game!

You should be able to override the DIPs in operator menu - if I remember right, the DIPs are a fallback if settings can't be loaded.

i tried that but the system gave me a message that the dip switch settings do not allow the change to freeplay. i believe they also have disabled the add credit switch next to the test switch.

tokens are working great and i have more than half of my games running on 'em so far... i have a few more to go before my New Years party. wish i had more than 1500 tokens though; sure sounds nice to drop in a coin in a cab with lots of tokens in it.
