The agony of killing your remaining lives on a good game

I play in a local bar band, and we play at this one homely tavern that has a small game room. I always play Galaga in between sets (it's a reunion cab). The high score is about 630,000, but they do have enabled continues (cheaters!), so I suspect that the high score was the result of several quarters. I always thought that was a pretty good score, and while I've scored higher than that, I've never done it on their machine. Last night, I FINALLY got enough momentum to cruise up to about 530,000 before I heard the dreaded: "Where's our bassist?" coming over the PA. I had to kill off my remaining several ships and settle for the #2 slot on the top 5. Damn it! I'll bet I could have done it if we didn't have to go back onstage. I guess our breaks simply aren't long enough.

Just thought I'd share. I hate when you have to waste your extra lives because you have to leave/do something else.

I definitely know how it feels. At Chuck E Cheese, I always play the Pirates of the Carribean pinball we have. I racked myself up a hearty 38,000,000 and counting on my first ball (which was my best ever) and heard the heart-sinking "Are you back from youre break yet?" coming from my manager. Thats when I remembered my break was over 15 mins ago. I had to let my remaining two balls...um, drop. For lack of better words.

I don't know if that's always the case. It's a fairly marathonable title as long as focus is maintained. Here are some results from the last CAG tourney.

I had a brain fart and started playing from the player 1 side so I had to kill my game off before I rolled the score at 1m but I was pretty surprised so many folks had some great Galaga skill but I think with the re-issue machine, etc, it's gotten to be DK-ish where the popularity has driven scores up.

If turbo-fire is enabled on the reunion machine it is an operator's worst nightmare.

I was down at LBI this month and at Fantasy Island at Beach Haven they had a reunion machine that had some pretty rough settings. 2 men to start and no rapid fire. I maxed the score on 1 credit though :)

Good luck with your future scores man, it's a great game.

Baseball teams have "on-deck" pitchers... :D Your band needs an "on-deck" bassist for situations like that!

Either that or someone needs to invent a turbo chip for Galaga if there isn't one already. Playing at twice the speed will allow you to rack up those points faster...but you might crash and burn twice as fast as well.

There is a "fast shoot" version... At least in mame.

its in the arcade too. until it broke recently there was one on location with the speed up hack at my local mall.

I had that same thought about the 630,000 score being legitimate... that's certainly not an outlandishly high score... but I have my doubts that it was done with one quarter considering that (1) continues are enabled, and (2) it's mostly kids scamming quarters off their parents and playing. Then again, I guess you probably wouldn't get that high without having some degree of Galaga skill.

I thought the same thing about a standby bassist! For the record, I did try to talk one of the drunken hoochies at the bar that night into covering for me on bass. No luck. Even she knew in her drunken state that I'd have to give up my game. Oh well... I guess I'll have to swing in for a beer and a few rounds while I'm free of time constraints.

A similar situation I have is when I try to play DK at my bar. I usually have the front door locked because it's a crappy neighborhood, but once in a while a regular will stop by while i'm playing DK. If I let him in it willl cost me one player if I'm not at a point where I stop. It used to bother me, but then I finally realize it's just a game and I'd rather make the money. Maybe I've been watching too much Gene Simmons on A&E.

hell if its a regular let him get his own beer and charge him for it when your done:) at the bars i frequent i get my own drinks all the time.
