I got a Taf and needed to replace the bookshelf circular platform. I got one and good god. What a nightmare to disassemble the old one. I desoldered the LED board just to get the stupid thing apart.

First question. I'm sure there was an easier way. What did I miss?

Secondly. I ordered a decal to cover the platform (so bizarre the standard is just blue or gold. Seems totally incomplete like the 'thing' box just being red plastic). The question is, do I need to take apart the whole bookshelf again to get the decal on? Or are they cut to fit over the whole thing?

Shopping a TAF now. Oddly enough I am just putting the bookcase back together. I also ordered a decal for the platform since I was going to have it all apart and, like you, felt it was a bit plain. Mine came from Little Shop Of Games. In the case of this specific decal, yes, you have to take the bookcase apart. It's cut to fit the openings pretty closely. You may be able to take the top off the bookcase itself and slip it over but I can see it being just as much of a pain as taking it out entirely. To lessen the chance of ruining the decal I would expect to tear it down.

The motor assembly / mounting bracket is designed brilliantly. The opto board / plastic top is not. You did NOT miss anything - the opto board has to be cut out and resoldered if you're going to replace or remove the plastic. You would have to otherwise literally shred the plastic to to get the small harness and the board out in one piece (which may be fine if you're replacing the plastic). The amount space inside the hollow part was simply not made large enough to fit the opto board through.
