the $150 space invaders deluxe adventure

Very nice job so far. Makes me contemplate restoring my SID as on side is faded bad. Great ideas for making the cab more secure using the blocks. I will be using this idea for the bottom of my Gunfight.

Thanks
Blake

finally ... i think we have had heavy rain almost every other day for the last 30 days but now we have a break and some fine weather for outdoor painting

shot the rattle can white on the left side this morning, took way more paint than i expected - using the krylon X with primer - i think i shot on about 4 light coats which seemed to cover the blue & red adequately but is now thicker than i wanted it to be - like duh

word of warning for anyone using the stencils from tog - they cut two cute little pacman into each stencil so make sure to tape over them unless you want to have two little two color pacmen on each side of your space invaders - why they did this ?

thanks! i'm going to have to do some touch ups by hand on the white, hopefully the other side will turn out a bit better
its quite tricky to use the vinyl stencils, have to pull them off before the paint is fully dry and pray that the edges will flatten out while drying and not pull up with the stencils - not easy to do

progress is so slow ... i am ready to be done with the painting and move on to the monitor and game boards and everything else - the fun bits

Do people sell the stencils after using them? I think it would be cool to get extra uses out of them. I feel like after you finish painting, there is no need for them anymore.

This look really good!

these stencils and most currently on the market are made from vinyl so they can't be reused
they pretty much disintegrate when you pull them back off the cabinet
i'll try to remember to take some picture of the actual stencil when i do the next side and post those

Gotcha. I'm sure these make it a lot cleaner.

That would be cool to see.

looking good kenney. great to save these old classic machines.I love what they could do with so little in technology

so, shot the final white stencil on the last side, turned out a bit better than the previous side but still will need touch-ups of the white variety
note the missing "eyes" on one of the monsters ... the white paint pulled back up a bit there when i removed the stencil so i removed all of that white paint for a fresh start later, i'll make a stencil from frisket and then re-spray that part

so, as for the stencils themselves & the "cute" little pacman cut into the stencils, well here's a couple pictures to see what they look like along with the first light coat of white
i sprayed on four light coats of white 15 minutes apart, then waited 15 more minutes and removed the stencil which is alot more difficult than i am making it sound, ideally one would lightly sand the base coat before spraying on this coat of white, but because the stencil is so intricate it is near impossible to do that with out damaging the stencil, and of course you can't scuff it up before you apply the stencil since you don't really know where it goes until you apply it .... sucks

so the best you can hope for is to very carefully pull the stencil off with out any of the white paint adhering to the stencil and hope the solvent in the paint allows it to meld into the existing paint on the cabinet (this may not be expressed in the correct terminology but i think it gets the point across)

Very inspiring!

Hey, great restore, Kenny!

Any updates?

I have a similar SID restore ahead of me... BAD cabinet problems that will probably require a complete rebuild.

well, so far i have painted stencils on both sides, painted the back & top, then painted in insides flat black

haven't worked up the nerve to tackle the front & am not looking forward to it either

will have to be done using frisket to paint the red while saving the other colors which will be painted by hand with a variety of small brushes - it may be possible for me to spray the black by making a frisket stencil but i don't have a lot of hope for that

we shall see

so with the cabinet stripped we can easily start with repairing the structural strength of the cabinet

remove all broken wooden reinforcing and leg mounting block from bottom of the cabinet and add new larger replacements gluing & stapling in place as we go

as you can see very moldy & nasty

adding the new blocking greatly improved the cabinets stability

Oh the horrors, the new wood is from a whirlwind!! :)
