ThatArtGuy's Track and Field Scratch Build

I was stuck with intermittent shutdowns for awhile on this chassis and then getting nothing at all after (no neck glow). Today I adjusted all the components back to where they originally were and replaced the transistor. While I was there, I reflowed the solder on monitor pins (they were cracked) and on the wires going to the outside resistor.

I still wasn't getting any neck glow, so I checked my power line. I took the pins out of the male connector and applied them directly. BOOM! It turns on immediately. I wove and wrapped some electrical tape on it, and called it a day. I left the machine on most of the day and turned it off and on multiple times with no issues.

It might actually be solid now.

I took the measurements that @RBLyon provided and made a template using white poster board. His measurements seem good, but I know my monitor is off. I will need to make mine a little different because of it. Later, I will make a printable PDF for others and see if the measurements are good for a genuine TnF/Hyper Sports.

Update on the bezel. I am getting closer. Just some minor changes to screen opening.

Oh, and I get to show off Numan Athletics 2. :p

I made some adjustments and I think I found the fix for my machine.

If anyone wants to check the accuracy of these files with an official shroud/bezel, it would be appreciated. I had to modify mine due to being a scratch build. When putting the sheets together, just tape the edges of the full pages together. Again, do not cut anything until they are taped together as full sheets. Black lines are cuts; dotted lines are folds.

Oh, and I might have some big news next week. We shall see.

So, we have news this week. I really wasn't looking for a TnF to restore, but this one pretty much came knocking on my door and I couldn't argue the price. Yeah, it works, but it will need to be gone over piece by piece. The monitor is really dim. Hopefully, a cap kit fixes it, but it might be the tube.

As we went to pick up the machine, it was literally in the back woods with heavy rain. (Many horror movies start this way.) The weather and light is much dimmer than it shows in the first picture. We got the machine wrapped in three layers (one being a tarp) and the sun came out just as we hit the highway.

The last pic is after the hour drive on the highway.

Here is the initial look. The second pic is not reflection, it is dust I wiped away. Marquee was broken, power button is on a Mason jar lid, and someone's entire childhood in the coin door.

There was a lot of items just dumped all over as we went down the driveway. Everything from 1960s speed boats to dryers.

Broken marquee and mood lighting. I still have yet to open the back door, but now I am scared.

I threw in some fabric softener sheets and closed the coin door after cleaning it out. (I even found childhood 4H cards, Sony remotes, egg cartons, speakers, family pictures, etc. in there.) It smells like wood smoke, and not cigarette smoke like you would imagine.

Finally got around to looking more into this new cabinet. I took off the marquee to take off the cab lock so I could take off the back door. I found more dust and even more dust. I kept thinking to myself, "You poor cab," as I got deeper and deeper into it.

I was warned that the joystick on player one would go "up." I told them it doesn't matter to me, but as you can see, it would be an easy fix if I wanted to keep the joystick.

I kept cleaning as I went and took shots of the monitor and PCB for identification. I am pretty certain the PCB is a bootleg. As for the monitor, I am fairly certain that a new cap kit and flyback will fix a lot of issues, since it looks better after adjustment. The tube has some burn-in however.

That is indeed a bootleg, can you post a picture from the other side? Is there any way you can read the ROMs and identify the ROMset?

Thanks!

And here is both sides of the board @parism . Do I have something desirable?
Hmm, that is a peculiar System16 bootleg, the top board reminds me of the Jumping (Rainbow Islands) bootleg. I would be curious to see if you can dump some ROMs and identify the ROMset.

Thanks,

p

I haven't posted in a long while but I removed the controls on the converted TnF. As an aside, my audio on my Hyper Sports Rearranged is wonky and the audio on my Mach Breakers just stopped playing sound effects. That is another post.

I get the chance to putter now and then. Took off the Taito CPO off of the TnF with a Sega game in it. *rolls eyes*.

Mach Breakers is now having audio issues now as well. I am going to have to get Mach Breakers and Hyper Sports Rearranged dealt with.

best way to protect metal from oxidizing (that coin door logo) is to put a thin layer of automotive wax on it. same with joystick shafts, if you buff those out in a drill with sand paper they will eventually rust. wax is the best. what was the build tally on the scratch build?
