ThatArtGuy's Track and Field Scratch Build

Still waiting on parts. The monitor wiring parts are still in the mail, along with the Hyper Sports board. That being said, Andrela found two Fujitsu chips that needed replacing.

While waiting, I moved around the PCBs because I am hoping to place the Hyper Sports flat. I may change my mind on that, but we shall see. The new arrangement is in the pics. (Nothing is touching.)

My sound absorbing material came in today, so I marked and disassembled the control panel. I cut the pieces and installed. I didn't want to spend $25 on a roller I would use once, so I just hand rolled with a large socket. The material adds like 10 lbs to the control panel, so it should work.

While the CP was off, I took the opportunity to paint the CP bracers. I took an aluminum pan and sprayed some of the spray paint I had from earlier into it and painted the edges. I wasn't aware of how much paint my sponge brush held, so it ran away from me at the beginning. I am just glad my PCB wasn't there at the moment.

That being said, it should be here tomorrow.

Buttons got slightly tangled when they dangled, but it is good enough for government work.

Now... hopefully onto the monitor.

I received the monitor parts yesterday and proceeded to make the connections I needed. Unfortunately, once I got everything together I have no neck glow. I will have to break out the multimeter later.

Another update since I haven't made one in awhile.

The Hyper Sports Rearranged board was fixed and sent back to me. When I connected everything I was getting squares for sprites. I started to reseat ROMs and again proceeded to break a pin. Even worse, I found our that the reason why I was getting the error was due to me missing a chip on reinstall. Joe is going to swap the part for me, so I can get back up to 100%.

As for the chassis, I tripped over a working K7000 on the marketplace here a couple days ago. I hope to have that one soon as well.

Small update today. My friend, Steve, dropped off my coin bucket today. Pictures for size reference. I will get some L-brackets to secure it down later.

Wow such an awesome and ambitious project!

It's one thing to buy an arcade game, but to build one from scratch is journey in and of itself. it's usually much more expensive but man, what a satisfying accomplishment when the dust settles.

Awesome job so far, looking great!

Got the working chassis today and hooked everything up. I now have video! It looks like it does need a cap kit since I am having some waving and edge issues. Also, I believe a new flyback is needed since I can't lock in brightness or contrast.

Getting closer!

Installed the coin box. I also ordered a whole bunch of monitor parts today (cap kit, POTs, etc.) to rejuvenate the chassis.

I did sneak in a quick game of Numan Athletics today though...

So, after FINALLY receiving my replacement part, I installed it into the PCB. (Thanks Canadapost for holding it for over a week for no reason.) I was getting sprite issues still so I took the top board off. I found a chip off by one pin ( I don't know how) and reseated it properly. Then it was off to the supergun.

It works!!! I then check for smoke, smells, or anything awry. Nope! All is good. Now for the real test: the cabinet.

I hooked up everything in the cabinet and resigned myself to hopefully hearing sound since the monitor seems to be out. To my surprise, everything turned on! I put on the back door so I could take photos, and then the monitor went out. I turned off the machine and tried again, no display.

I took off the door, and then gave it a couple minutes. I turned on the machine and had an image. I quickly took more pictures and played a quick game. The game looks and plays sooooo much better than my supergun, even with a board in desperate need of a recap. CRT is far superior for these games. (LCD upgrade my #@$%.)

There is one major issue though. The JAMMA switcher switches games by pressing P1 and P2 together which is great most of the time. However, those buttons also reset the dip switches on the Hyper Sports Rearranged board when powering up. I will have to change the switch buttons for the JAMMA switcher to fix that issue.

Got my flyback, cap kit, and pots along with some other needed monitor parts today. It is snowing outside and I have no work tomorrow, so I have some time to get things done.

The image on the monitor is squashed, is wavy, and can't have the contrast/brightness changed. Time to fix that.

After toiling forever this afternoon on the chassis, I got an image that looks better! I then connected the JAMMA switcher to P3 and P4 Start buttons and turned it around to actually be played.

All three games work, but the display needs to be degaussed. I also noticed some curl and other issues such as random image shutoff, but right now I am good.

The coin door isn't functional, but all games are on freeplay. So cosmetically, I need a glass and cardboard bezel for the front.

Here they are so far.

I was getting random shutdowns so I replaced the pot at VR8. So far, no issues.

Now, there are contrast issues between games on the switcher. It isn't too much of a problem due to a remote board, but still annoying.
