E-gay strikes again! I found a great deal on some arcade parts that a friend needed to finish a project he has been working on for some time now.... So I place a bid and win for a really super low ammount and send payment plus shipping via paypal and then, BAM, the seller e-mails me a day later telling me I owe him more money for shipping when it was clearly posted in his auction listing that it would be $22.....

What shall I do now?

You have 3 choices...

Fight it and face a non-paying bidder attempt by the seller.

Ask him how much more and if it's not much then just pay it. It does cost more to ship up there. ;)

Tell him to screw off and report him to eBay since he had it listed with shipping for $22. Tell him you'll be happy to also leave him negative feedback.

he is trying to tell me the shipping will be $40 more...... thats my hang up. ffs its only a plexi monitor bezel and a flimsy wood cp lol.

Well, you are in Alaska... it seems that you'd be used to more expensive shipping. I'm guessing the seller said something like "shipping is $22 to the US", but I'd think of that as the contiguous 48. While he should have stated that more clearly, IMO, you should have messaged him first to clarify that the rate is valid for AK. But yeah... depending how much the difference is, I'd either just pay it, offer to split the difference, or if that's a deal breaker, just say that you were counting $22 shipping into the value, and unless he's willing to ship for $22 that you want a refund and to cancel the transaction.

was the shipping price specifically for you? or flat rate? i've miscalculated shipping costs before and had to pay a little extra but $40 more seems a bit far fetched. i've had items from Japan ship all the way to NY for far less.

That is what my arguement is. The shipping was clearly stated as $22 with no exceptions except that it was valid in the usa only! Contrary to popular belief shipping to alaska isnt that much more than anywhere else. The seller explained that his items had to go through canada to get to me, in which i clearly corrected him. they infact go to seattle then to alaska not entering canada at all. I offered to split the difference but $40 more is outlandish. Hell a metal cp for a corner cut dynamo was only $21 shipped to me and it was heavy as heck. I have recieved a monitor bezel before and it was only $12 so thats $33 as per my calculations and nowhere near the $22 i paid plus the demand for $40 more!

I cant stand a sheister.......... If he wont split the difference I will just take it up with paypal and E-gay :-(

Sounds like the seller is just trying to profit from the shipping. (more so than usual)
I'd nit pick the auction listing for anything that states other than the $22 and stick to it.

I just won a .99 auction, shipping was stated as 5.99.....cool right?
Received it today and the shipping label was 10.85....seller took a loss, but he upheld his end of the deal.

This is all on the seller and he should uphold what the price of shipping says in his listing.I would tell him to ship it for $22 or file a dispute.

I was burned on shipping one time when the buyer was in Hawaii.....so now I state "Continental US" in all my shipping descriptions...

Sounds like ya'll need to meet somewhere in the middle.

Heh. Similar thing just happened to me as a seller. Someone from Puerto Rico bought an item from me. The auction listed $15.95 via UPS ground as the shipping cost/method, but UPS considers PR an international shipment even though it's still in the US. I miscalculated the USPS postage and thought it was going to cost me ~$35 so I asked the buyer to chip in an additional $10. It turns out the shipment was actually only $19 so I refunded the $10. Anyhow, now I'm putting lower 48 in all my descriptions!

As for you, I would think that Alaska would be considered zone 8 with USPS which is the most expensive, but by no means would it increase that much. That's crazy to ask you to pay an additional $40.

There should be very little discussion between you and the seller.

Message him, via ebay, "I won the auction, paid for the auction, please ship item as stated".

If he doesnt agree, simply report him and give neg feedback.

If we dont hammer shitty sellers HARD, they will multiply.

He stated the shipping - hold him to it. The only thing you should do is to insist on and pay for insurance (he's pissed now, so you want to make sure the shipment is insured in case he does a deliberately bad job packaging it). The auction is a binding agreement in BOTH DIRECTIONS. Yes, the buyer has to pay, and yes the seller has to ship.

EBay provides automatic shipping calculators that work pretty well in my experience, if the seller uses them properly. If the seller does not, then it's not going to give the right answer (duh). If the seller quotes fixed rate shipping, then the seller needs to abide by the fixed rate shipping.

This is why I always use the calculators - it takes longer to setup the auction because I've got figure out how I'll package stuff and get a reasonable weight, but it's worth it for the no-surprises shipping costs.

The shipping calculators suck. I find you have to overstate the size and weight of the box to cover the actual shipping cost.

Ask for the dimensions and weight of the package so you can do your own price estimate with USPS then pay that amount. That's the honest thing to do. Pay the actual shipping. Expecting the guy to eat the extra cost because he didn't specify "lower 48" only is a dick move. Threatening a neg if he doesn't eat the extra shipping is an even bigger dick move. If he's trying to charge you more than actual shipping then that's the biggest dick move of all.

It is how most sellers avoid paying too much of a fee to eBay is by nailing you to the wall with Shipping charges. I've paid $10 shipping before to get something in a free USPS box with crumpled used newspaper in it and a couple of runs of brown tape that might have cost 50 cents collectively and the shipping cost on the label is like, 3 bucks. But I agree with the majority here, if it wasn't stated 'Contiguous 48' then that shipping rate should count. I"ve seen those who do add "Shipping is Higher for AK, HI and Territories, please contact seller for shipping cost to those areas" or some such in their postings.

As for me, I always used to do everything in flat rate boxes for 7.70 and if I had to use different packaging, I ate the extra cost to make sure the goods got to the customer. Only had one issue ever, and that was the guys wife had signed for the package and forgot to give it to him. 4 days after his profanity laced tyraid, I received a cookie tin in the mail with fresh baked oatmeal raisin cookies and an apology from the buyer.

Interesting. I've not had a problem at all (it might be off by 50 cents or a dollar, but not more). I wonder what I'm doing differently than you are? Note that I also put a $2 s/h fee in my auctions (it shows up as part of the shipping cost) to cover being a little over, buying bubble wrap, etc.
