I had recently seen and expressed a liking for a hand drawn poster/flyer that Dan had kept from his old Skating haunt back in the 80's. Dan scanned the document, had a copy printed, framed it and sent it to me as a gift. How cool is that? What I like about this is that it is totally mid to late 80's amateur Skateboard artist style. Just awesome. The electrical plug in the back thing is a little disturbing though, isn't it? I wish I had some of these from places I went to as a kid.

Very cool. Stuff like that is awesome.

I live up the road from there and visited about 5 months before they tore that place down.
Sad that they are building condos or something in it's location.

Yeah I was pretty bummed to see it go after being in business for 34 years. Lots of good memories and like many skating rinks it seemed to only change slightly in those 34 years. I'm doing what I can to preserve a little piece of Cal Skate Milpitas in my arcade but I'll wait until I finish that project to go into detail about it.

One of the things that actually bums me out the most was that I missed the last day the rink was open. I was told by the owners that they had filled one of the party rooms with pictures spanning the 34 years of business and at the end they told people to take what they wanted. Of course they took everything but sadly the pictures seemed to have disappeared rather than gotten scanned and posted somewhere on the net as I would hope. There is actually little evidence even on the net that Cal Skate Milpitas existed. I find this sad especially since it was actually documented so well.

The place near where I grew up was called Rollerama, and it suffered a similar fate. It was torn down to build a supermarket. There are at least 5 supermarkets within 10 minutes of that new Giant.

Rollerama pretty much went up with the community, and other places that did that were considered landmarks and preserved. No such luck for them. I wasn't much into roller skating, but it still bummed me out to see it destroyed.
