After several years of piddling with this, since 2005 to be exact. This G08 has been the bane of my existence.
Well tonight - I finally broke through that barrier and it is now working 100% as well as the game. Thanks to all that have been of help to this project in information and materials purchased.
Celebrating as we speak

Just spent over an hour on your website reading all about your Star Trek restoration and the troubles with the G08 monitor. Thanks for posting so much information, very interesting! Glad you got your game going, it's a lot of fun and now you need a Space Fury.

Wow -- quite a saga! Congrats!

Did you ever get your coining up issue resolved? If so, what do you think fixed it?

Lol, I haven't gotten to that part yet. Just pleased as punch to have the G08 at 100%.
The coin up is practically the last stop.
Thanks Braido, it's been a long journey.

g08

congrats. ST is one of my favorites and i have a fear that one day it will crash and burn due to the monitor, so i sidelined it the other day and it is going to get shopped before the monitor explodes. you got a lot of patience and Perseverance and i am glad it paid off for you.

haha, well I've been there. I've had the G08 crash and burn hard. Sparks, flames and all. Not having any experience at all with the G08 but alot of heart for passions of 80's childhood, I can honestly say that the keyword is RELENTLESS.
Comparative information and accurate sites and more information. Back before the internet, stuff like this would have been nearly impossible to bring back. I'm just glad there's a community of us that will help each other beyond monetary gain. I think alot of our Monitor gurus could be ALOT more helpful but honestly, catching a stray 1N914 or 2N3906 going south is a bit beyond remote help.
I know I ask ALOT of hairbrained questions and sometimes can be annoying in my relentless demonstrations of newbness and nauseous portrayal of honesty. Really - I just want to build an arcade with kick-ass games I grew up with and for family and friends to drop in.
It's stuff like this, that takes A LONG TIME to figure out that is most rewarding of all and a great sense of massive achievement.
I know some of you have blogs spanning repairs of a dozen or so G08's. But for me - this is something! :D
I'm surprised you were actually able to get through all that Braido - in an HOUR. Strangely enough, the site zinfer.com helps me out just as much as I hope it does others. My memory isn't getting any better the older I get. It helps me to know where I've been and what the next step is. Did I replace Big Blue on this project - oh yes I did, right there it is in black and white. Plus - if I can give something back - your more than welcome to it.

Wow, glad you stuck it out and saw the project all of the way through. I have only watched a local friend work on his Star Trek conversion, and that scared me enough to not to take an incomplete Star Trek conversion when I was offered the opportunity.

He also had the pleasure of seeing his G08 catch on fire with a light show, thankfully his problems were much more minor and he got it working quickly. The G08 in his game throws off a huge amount of heat, much more than any other monitor I've experienced.

Seeing one working 100% is a real thrill, especially during the Star Trek attract mode. The monitor image is very different from my own WG6100; especially the whites which can have a slight rainbow effect.

Great game too, especially for a Star Trek fan. Like Q*Bert, it seems to be a game I will only be able to experience through someone else's collection (and the ColecoVision ports of each).

Aren't these shadow/rainbow effects just misconvergence?

Wow. Thanks for linking that. Not sure why I didn't see that thread. That sideart sure would look sweet on this puppy.

And now that I've finished patting myself on the back and congratulating myself, started working on coin-up issues, on the 3rd day I powered it up and the monitor is all scraggy again.

Never again. I will never do another Star Trek project. I am at the edge of my wits on this project and it's always monitor problems.

You are 100% sure its the monitor and not the video output from the game board?

Define "scraggy" or post a photo.

Yea it could be the video output. I did just pull the CPU board out to take a look at the game switches. So, I did have to pull the cabling to the XY boards.
Honestly I just wanted to get to the coinup issue as I spent over a year working on this monitor off and on. That monitor is something that will pull you straight in and for a very long time once you start messing with it.
I'll see if I can get this thing to coin-up.
I have a lead on switch settings so I'm going to have to pull the CPU board again. With any luck I'll find a cable that's upside down or just not sitting right or something.
I'll post a pic or a video but it really looks like the paddleboards went wonkey.
DAMMIT!!

Well thanks to Demogo's settings I got the little bastard to finally begin coining up. It never did since I'd originally gotten the project.
Crimp wire nuts secured, wire-ties cleaning it all up and it's now coining.
Last issue is the monitor yet again. I am looking so forward to throwing the back door on this cabinet, crossing fingers and cringing each time at power up - kind of like typical Asteroids.
I'm going to look this over and see if there's maybe a loose connection somewhere.
I'm awaiting some diodes from Mouser. I am planning on reworking the paddle boards if that doesn't yield anything.

Fearless in the face of great danger.
But atm, ST is pissing me off so much I turned to Star Wars. Monitor issues - all these monitor issues...
oh for pete's sake--a diode 914 in backwards...throw back together-recheck - didn't fix a darn thing.
Going where angels fear to tread...onward-onward!!

well, at least you're not mad.
