TG's new DK rules

Hey gorfchampion check out the wikipedia page for Todd Rogers , http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Todd_Rogers_(Gamer)

It says "Rogers gained local notoriety in 1982 at Burbank Haunted Trails for his world record on the arcade game Gorf. On November 24, 1982, he scored 653,990 points, a world record that stood for over 26 years on the Twin Galaxies scoreboard."

But then gorfchampion showed up and kicked some ass !!!

You know, I NEVER even thought of this. With all the ROM burners out there... just put what ever you want on them and go. Wow.

Since you're trying inane sarcasm and completely missing the point...

The rom labels on DK don't cover the window, so they can be erased and reprogrammed without altering the "label". Ostensibly they're specifying a TKG4 and looking at the labels to make sure you're not running one of the earlier ROMsets that came native on TKG2/3 boards, but since they're too clueless to actually checksum ROMs, the TKG4 roms could be reburned with earlier code that's not "valid".

Wasnt sarcasm man... seriously, I never even thought about just reprogramming ROMs... was a good point. I would have never thought to do that, but it seems so damn obvious now that you say it. There is really no way on video to protect against it.

Thanks, Gorfchamp, for the input on TG and Funspot. From my phone conversations with Walter "Stonewall" Day and what I've heard here, the more I dislike the TG clique thing.

But I just keep messin with the cam experimenting with submitting scores anyway...

Yeah, it would be nice to just play games and have the camaraderie without all the "politics". Hey, Hawk, where ya at?!:D

So Funspot is like the flagship arcade for TG then? Oh, how I would like to crash that party sometime on a couple different games with a ref present.;)

Hey, TG! How bout a rep for CAX? yeah, good luck:eek:

I don't like the clique thing either. Problem is, if you want a score verified so it will actually be in the record book you have to go thru TG. With as much complaining as I have done I'm surprised they accepted any of my scores. TG is certainly understaffed, as it took more than 6 weeks to verify my score. After that I almost didn't get on the front page because the owner of the website is trying to phase out the classics from front page news.

I got super pissed off(I mean come on I beat a hell of a long standing score) and they put my story up; about 1/3 of it; promising to put the rest up later(which included Todd Rogers' opinions on the whole thing). I inquired about it months later, and they said the remainder of my interview got lost and would not be put up on the website.

Almost needless to say, my story/score was not included in the brand new edition of the record book(which Walter Day said they always miss a story or two every edition); but come on, I beat Todd's "unbeatable" score(respectfully, I never talked shit) and they fucking forget to put me in the book? Sure was a lot of refs and clique-type nerds in that fucking book, though. No matter in the end, I have the !@$#%$* record...

When I was going for the record in the end it was more about proving to myself that I could beat his score; it wasn't "hey I beat Todd Rogers now he's a loser". It was harder than hell to beat his score but I've always been good at the game, I just needed to play at a higher level. If it wasn't for Todd's score I would probably never have scored as high as I did. Its all fun in the end and I don't take it too seriously(I got my 15 minutes).

I think some of the nerds(King of Kong bunch) hang onto this shit too tight because its all they have. Hell I like competitive gaming too but not enough to treat my fellow man like a piece of shit. Its supposed to be fun.

Really? All the classics with the exception of DK, I assume...:p Wow! Another whammy! Sad:(

Yeah, except for DK! I heard from the ref I always send my tapes to that even Weibe's DK junior score almost didn't make the front page(this was in April I think?); they were supposed to set up an area that you can click on just for the classics; but that hasn't happened yet. So far some damn good scores on classics have gotten mediocre write ups in the forums section of the website, which is about at dead as it gets. Sad because it was the classics that started the whole thing anyway.

I could personally give a shit less about xbox and ps3; but I'm sure there's TONS of players who give even less of a shit about the classics and the WR scores including mine.

If you check out this interview , Todd talks about his Gorf record like its his pride and joy accomplishment http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=epeOGjlRI78 ,

I can see now how you angered the Nerds by defeating it ! It was a big deal .

I would have never known Steve broke the DK Jr record , but I happen to be checking out the stats one day and saw it . But I didn't hear any news about it ,

You can count on them accepting anything Billy has on tape. I have no doubt about that....
billy got the current world record in front of a live audience. the last donkey kong world record submitted on tape was by steve wiebe.

Billy is a hell of a player; and is calm and cool in front of a live audience. What I was saying is IF he submitted a tape it would be accepted. But I remember now, Todd Rogers told me in person at Funspot that if he thought Mitchell cheated(on a tape),or didn't follow the rules, and he was the ref reviewing it he'd shoot it down right then and there. He said he has no loyalty to Mitchell for anything or any reason. It just seems sometimes that its like the wolf guarding the chickencoup with this DK stuff sometimes. Good point in the end though bradd.

Remember the tape Mitchell submitted in King of Kong? Had all this weird stuff wrong with it. I suppose that was part of the "fiction" part of the movie to make it more interesting. Hell what do I know anyway...

A few things of note:

Walter does Twin Galaxies because he essentially is the only one who cares enough about the scores to do it. It's not a perfect science, but he's doing what he can.

Second, I know the rules are insane. They might have had to do that for legal reasons or whatnot. There has to be something more behind it. No one should have to go through something that rigorous. A lot of things in there make no sense for 30 year old hardware.

Third, gorfchampion, what exactly is a "nerd" to you? Did you have such an issue at FunSpot where the "undertones" got to you and you have an issue with people in general there?

I used to go to Funspot each and every year for the tournament until 2004. There are some very nice people there but calling people "nerds" when you can break world records on 27 year old video games that obviously took a lot of practice and own 20+ arcade machines is kind of a head scratcher. We ALL are into our own stuff and whatnot, but that doesn't mean you should just start name calling the whole bunch of the guys because a lot of them might be weird to you and whatnot.

A LOT of people that collect video games and play games for scores extensively and travel for tournaments all have their own nuances and such. A lot of people have personality issues, social ineptitude; I mean, you could go on and on here, but I just don't understand the need to name call a group of people that were at the same event you were at.

Like with ANY social circle, I am sure it's an issue for "outsiders" to break-in when Walter and Billy have been doing this for so long and the other referees have been basically doing this for free, but it still doesn't make any sense.

Congrats on the Gorf record, BTW, Todd is a stand-up guy and it's good to see old records falling after so many years!

You're right, I should not be calling people nerds when I'm basically a nerd myself. Its not my nature to namecall and now I feel bad about it. I realize that the "gamers" are more apt to be called nerds in the end because it always seemed like the geeky guys were the ones playing the games. Not true, and I apologize if I offended anyone.

And yes, people "got to me" at Funspot. People were very stand-off-ish to me and my family. Hey I never went in with a cocky attitude saying I beat Todd's score or "hey look how good I am at the game!" I'm pretty laid back and respectful with the exception of calling a bunch of people nerds in this thread. Like I said, I didn't expect to all of the sudden be able to hang out with Walter Day or be having lunch with Todd Rogers(although he did ask me if I wanted to go have a beer at one point); that wasn't it at all. All I wanted was to be treated as well as anyone else who may have broken a long standing record on a major title, and TG fell short of that IMO. On the other side though, I appreciate TG recognizing my efforts at all and felt priviledged that they DID do a write up and put my story on the front page.

I know how hard their job is(Steven Boyer has become a good friend of mine and talks about the ups and downs of the refereeing thing). They have an impossible job in trying to satisfy everyone; especially a needy geek like myself....

This is the definition of Nerd ,

nerd : an unstylish, unattractive, or socially inept person; especially : one slavishly devoted to intellectual or academic pursuits <computer nerds>

nothing weird about it if you ever had a vcr. the TV was set on its side and the tracking was a little off. usually that would cause little interference on the top of the screen or bottom, but the TV was on its side, so the interference was on the side. with that in mind, it looks like any VHS tape without the tracking properly set.

anyways, its a moot point, obviously he can score the score on the video, because he surpassed that score live in front of an audience. i think maybe wiebe thought billy cheated and so he sent a fraudulent tape himself, its wiebe who has yet to produce in public, not billy.

i know everyone loves steve and billy seems like a bad guy based on the movie, but keep in mind who was friends with and got their donkey kong board from mr awesome roy schildt. after all the shit he pulled, why wouldnt TG be suspicious at first?

I think that if you're walking around the arcade bothering people while they are playing to let them know that there's a possible kill screen about to happen on Donkey Kong, you sir, are a NERD.

Gorfchamp, From what you keep saying, it sounds like you were hoping to meet some KLOV'ers at Funspot! :D Glad you found where we actually hang out...

The power supply, ROM labels, Z80, and 2 board set things are comically absurd. However, regarding the joystick, I believe that Wiebe was originally using an 8-way joystick for his record submissions, and if I remember right, it has been claimed that you can do something advantageous on the ladders with an 8-way joystick that you can't do with a 4-way joystick.

In any event, if they are concerned about that, they shouldn't require that it is an original Nintendo 4-way joystick; just that it is a 4-way joystick. Back in the '80s, Wico actually made a replacement joystick specifically for Donkey Kong machines, and Sanwa joysticks (4 & 8-way adjustable) are a drop-in replacement as well

not to mention that, but what about us with cocktails. everything as far as showing boards, opening the control panel, etc, just became for of a challenge.

It does say to contact them if you plan on submitting with a cocktail or cabaret before submitting. I have a cocktail too, but at this point, I'm not planning on submitting anything anyway. My top score is only 373K, I have the D2K kit installed in mine (which isn't allowed for a DK submission) and I don't have a video camera anyway ;) But at least they didn't completely forget about them. Showing the boards will be tricky, but the control panel part isn't too bad. There's 2 security bolts (that can only be removed from the inside, and I've left off on mine) and 3 phillips screws on the outside, and it hinges open.

Sorry to hear you didn't have much fun at the tourney this year gorfchampion. Well, you did meet at least one KLOV member :) It was nice meeting you, and I wish I'd had a chance to talk to you more, but I only saw you there one day and you were playing Gorf most of that time ;) I've been there 4 times now (including 2 tourneys) and had lots of fun each time. Of course, I didn't beat one of their long standing records (I'm decent at alot of games, but not WR quality) so maybe that made a difference.
