TG's new DK rules

I m all for the scores being accountable tho... but this seems to take the fun out it and makes it more of a business than a game...

Bingo. This is exactly what I thought. Nothing like taking the fun out of something.

But remember, TG promotes integrity above all else..... or at least till Robert Mruczek quits.....;)

"...wanted to be a hero, I wanted to be the center of attention, I wanted the fame, the glory, I wanted the pretty girls to come up to me and say "Hi, I see you are good at Centipede." --Walter Day

All that crap is only because of the King of Kong. People should just submit their scores on a more worthy game. Nobody is going to beat Billy Mitchell anyway; as much as I'd like to see his score fall....
The question is, when someone does, will they still take any of the half a dozen or so higher scores that douchebag has in reserve or will they say sorry thos didn't follow the rules?

What a bunch of tools. I've said this before, these guys need a couple of girls - seriously.

Sounds like the new rules were put in place to encourage people to not even try to beat Mister Arrogance. Hell, he probably authored them.

Yeah, like Gorf!...:D

Didn't you have to go through the same hoops, basically, to submit your score on Gorf? Prolly with the exception of the CP interior inspection...

It wasn't that bad. You start with the game off, turn it on, make sure that the entire screen is visible(and never obscure it by walking in front of the camera), play your game, when finished get a close-up of the score, keep the camera ON the cabinet at all times while walking around to the back and film the dipswitch settings. Seems like a lot but if you look at it from a ref's point of view its really the minimum you need to do. There's people that cheat and have figured out nice slick ways to maybe cheat a score. You can't turn the camera on and off, or take the camera off the game, etc.

Even so, the best way is still to get a good score live in front of people. I scored 750K on Gorf in front of Walter Day and Todd Rogers at Funspot in May. Quite short of my own record but still beat Todd's old record by 100K.

You can count on them accepting anything Billy has on tape. I have no doubt about that....

I guess if you have a cocktail, you have to have the dipswitches set for the upright. Actually they should disqualify you if you have a cocktail, because the power supply is different.

I'm going to email them and explain that a different line voltage will make the power supply output a different voltage... so instead of cheating with the power supply, all somebody has to do is up the juice at their meter box. So they really, really need to stamp this shit out, and start the video outside with the camera on the telephone pole that your power is delivered through. If you're in a neighborhood with buried cables, NICE TRY BITCH DONT CHEAT NEXTTIME!!!!!

Like I said before gentlemen, put your efforts into a different game; there's too much crap involved with DK. Only because of that f*cking movie did everyone crown DK as such a great game. Yes, its a good game and worthy of recognition but everyone should just play something else. Yeah I suck at DK but still think its a good game.

I have nothing against DK, nor am I'm try'ng to (ever) go for a highscore on it...

But it's only a matter of time before those rules eventually bleed into other games. And since I have a Tron with re-burned EPROMs, and an aftermarked joystick (has a micro-leaf instead of the regular leaf), and I have the new ribbons from Bob Roberts. And since I've hammered out a top 15 score (won't submit anything till I'm top 10) I worry that when I do, they'll be like "Oh, you didn't get the memo? You have to take the entire machine apart, separate all the boards, film all EPROMs and processors, disassemble the joystick, show the grommet, eat a bowl of Cracklin' Oat Bran, and shove a pine cone down your urethra... sorry, can't accept the video"

One more thing guys, I don't mean to offend the DK lovers out there with my posts. Hell, its a great game and one I want in my collection. The whole King of Kong thing and TG weird take on the whole mess just makes it all undesireable IMO. Play the game to have fun, not to get all tangled up with TG in a wrestling match.

I know how TG is mostly hated around here. I didn't have such a pleasant ride with them myself believe me; and I was a complete outsider at Funspot; I'll never make that trip again for the tournament that's for sure. I just happened to submit my tapes to a ref who is an outsider himself(Boyer); except for Gorf which I had to ALSO send a copy to David Nelson.

I know Walter Day is also not liked much around here for various reasons, but he was nice to me when I was at FS; and I had maybe 15 minutes of conversation with him; and he watched about the last 15 minutes of my Gorf game. It wasn't like we went out and had lunch or anything.

TG has their own little clicky club and if you're not an original member you're an outsider. It wasn't like I was planning on hanging out with Brian Kuh or anything. In the end I was just glad my scores were accepted.

I am totally with you on this; but it might be a while before that happens. Submit your score soon, before things get worse. If all the games end up like DK; people will lose interest and will stop submitting scores. Hell maybe that's what they want; the money is in the newer console stuff not these old dinosaurs. Just look at their front page....

joystick question

First off, If they are changing the rules, the whole thing should start over. Throw out all prior scores, period. There are way too many unverified and BS scores in TG in general, not just in DK.

Second, does anyone feel like a different joystick would really give an advantage? I actually like the feel of playing a wico 4 way (arcadeshop board in midway cocktail) better than the Nintendo original (all original DK cab) , but I suck, and I dont think the wico makes me any less sucktacular.

You're right, there are a ton of BS scores; most of them are marathon scores from the 80's; which will probably never get pulled from the scoreboard. Better to concentrate on the tournament scores instead. Like the Robotron controversy over the 70 hour, 348 million point game. Who gives a shit about that, the true champion is the dude who got over 900K with 5 men...

Double Whammy

Yeah, you got that one right. I didn't go out to Funspot to become a member of the click; I was just hoping to be treated like a fellow gamer and enthusiest; maybe shoot the breeze with some people who love the games and like to play. This did happen to some extent, but there was some nasty undertones that a guy could just "feel", you know what I mean?

It was like "Oh you're the asshole that beat Todd Roger's Gorf score; well it won't be long before he takes it back." No one said that to my face but that's the general feeling I got.

Hey I told Rogers and everyone else I support whoever tries taking down my score. If you can play Gorf on one quarter for 5 hours and beat me hell I'll honor that. And then I will put up a better score and take it back...

Damn those Nerds !

I thought once someone takes the High Score on a game then the Nerd Herd accepts you as one of them , come to think of it , not like anyone would really want to be accepted but the fact if your not an original member you're treated like an outsider is stupid . I hate clicks , if there is one I try my best NOT to be accepted , bunch of weak minded people .

I'm glad I suck enough at ALL games to not ever have to worry about wanting to submit a score to TG...

Right on man. Well, I didn't go out to FS in hopes of being "accepted" by a bunch of nerds. I'm my own man. I was just hoping(foolishly hoping at that) that everyone wouldn't act like a bunch of f*cking 8th graders, or like some frat dudes at an initiation ceremony. Well, I was wrong. Some of those people are just damn strange. I did meet some cool guys and wish I would've had more time to visit with some of them...

I know what you mean , you wanted to go hang out with the guys that have a love for these old arcade games like yourself , which is what I would want to do if I was going for High Scores too , because its fun !! But those Nerds don't play because they have a love for the games , they play to go up in status in their Nerd Kingdom .

That sums it up. The biggest thing for me though was to play the games and have fun with my wife and daughter. Which we did. I wanted to meet Todd Rogers, too. He was very respectful and nice, as was I in return. I probably talked to him for over 2 hours total over the few days we were there. Nice guy, and he seems to be good at almost every game.

Todd Rogers was CAX the year before last... not sure if he was there in any official capacity though.
