Text Editing an Adobe Illustrator file. Anyone help?

Hey guys,

I was working on some Gauntlet art in Illustrator and the file corrupted on me. I was tracing a very large high res scan and maybe because I was saving every 15 minutes it just got too much in the end and the file corrupted. I am unsure. I have tried everything I can by trying to open it in various different programs, exporting, importing etc but had no luck. I can see the file if I choose to 'place' the file in Illustrator but as soon as I click ok, I just get a white box.

The one thing I haven't tried is text editing the file in notepad or specific text/hex editing prog. Reason: I don't know anything about it :D

So, I am looking for someone who is competent in text editing to take a look at the file for me. Perhaps some of the data can be located and retrieved which would save me a lot of time by not having to redraw it. I can see my layers in the text file when opened in notepad, I couldn't see the scan but being a 450meg file, there are a LOT of pages to scroll through :D

Any help appreciated. The file has been split and uploaded ready for download.

*mods, feel free to move this, but it is kinda arcade related and I am desperate*

Good luck... I have never been able to salvage a corrupt Illustrator file. :(

For future endeavors, instead of "re-saving" the same file, get in the habit of saving a version named filename-1, then filename-2, etc. I usually save 5 versions, and then start over at filename-1. Just so you have several copies if things go south...

I've been through wht you're going through. It sucks ass. Which is why that's what I do now with really large, labor-intensive files...

Thanks mate.
Yeah it sucks alright. I was going really well too, lol.

I have started redrawing the rest of the scan (in smaller sections too :D) and if I can't get it fixed I will go back to what I had already done and redraw that again.

This time I am saving on 2 drives and in .ai, .eps and .pdf. Saving 6 times, hahaha. I was doing backups named _copy. Oh well, you live and learn I guess.

Yeah. It sucks. Wish I had a better answer... Maybe it is save-able, but I don't know how...

I can only try I guess.

Just been looking at the file as text and found some issues. Its missing some input text of where the actual data (drawings) are supposed to start. It should have %%begindata. The corrupt file doesn't have it anywhere. Its also missing about 4 sentences above that which dictates the size of the bounding box and thumbnail size. Trying to add it now but because the file is so large it stops responding with each key stroke.

BTW,

This is where I was up too if anyone is interested:

Before anyone says it, yes, this file has already been done but I want more detail in my art. The files available online have very poor detail and don't do the original artist's drawings any favours. I would like to preserve this art at as good as I can get it hence why I am redrawing it. And yes, it is going to be the 'tall' version of this sideart.

This is the progress which I have started again:
