NEWS Testing a split of Videogame for Sale: Games vs. parts.

Just in case somebody stumbles across this, you now have to search both forums because there's literally tons of parts and pcb's in the 'whole games' forum, and the mods don't move them over to the other forum.

So if you're interested in buying parts, you now have to wade through two forums instead of 1.

Thanks for all the hassle, mods!

This experiment would work a lot better if:

1. People learn to read. PCBs do NOT constitute whole machines
2. People actually USE the SOLD attribute
3. People learn to follow directions (like putting your state in the title)

Unfortunately, laziness seems to be rampant. If the users don't care and the mods don't enforce, then we aren't any better off then we were in the first place. (honestly the mods don't need any additional work)

Not only are we not better off, we're worse off. It complicates things, even for the people who are trying to do it the right way.

Go check out all the posts on the 1st page, selling both full games, AND parts. How's that work? I guess they should make seperate posts in seperate forums.

More work for the sellers, and less people see it. More work for the buyers because you have to search both forums to see games, or parts since they're mixed up.

What's the benefit of this again?

The people that come on here once a month want it to be easier for them to find a complete game.

Just to add to my not liking the split, i am going to point out that alot of high post count, high feedback, active members dont like it. Guys like tron lyons and dj sell alot on here and there opinions should matter more than the few guys that like the split and dont sell and dont often buy.

I'm not a fan of the split. I prefer one section with "game" or "parts" title prefixes or maybe even "game & parts" for someone that wants to list both in a single post. I think having multiple sections limits exposure for sellers, as a buyer might not specifically be looking for parts, but may buy them when seeing a for sale post that they wouldn't see in the complete games section.

Why would the people who have the time to post dozens of messages every day get priority? Obviously those people have time to search 80 times a day, or just read every new post regardless of where it's posted.

Separate sections makes it easier for the average forum user. Have you ever tried to find whole working games? There are 100 parts posts for every complete game post. If you are looking for parts, you have no problem, so there's an occasional whole game thrown in your search. Mature forums have these things separated similarly and it works well, especially when there is good enforcement of the posting rules.

Change is great, if there's a good reason for it. Change for the sake of change often screws up a good thing.

BTW, Wade, you're missing all kinds of full games in the other forum. Hope you're searching both.

I personally like the change. It works for me and helps to quickly sort things out. I would recommend 1 additional change: it would be good to use some sort of "form" system for the full cabs in particular... Half of the time I'm sending replies to ask for location of seller, willingness to ship, proposed price, etc. Seems a bit of a waste of time when someone should probably put these deets in when trying to sell...

The two sections are such a cluster fuck with parts and cabs scattered throughout there is no way it helps anyone quickly do anything.

If votes are ever tabulated about the split, I vote for a return to an integrated For Sale section. Thanks!

So no updates? And i have not seen any posts moved when they are put in the wrong section. Days go by, the part gets sold, never goes into the parts section.
So if you want parts look in both sections.
And if you want cabs look in both sections.
And if you want your parts to stay on the first page longer, just put it in the cab section.

I'm traveling a decent amount this month, but I haven't forgotten this. I have an idea for a test to combine things a tad in a slightly different way than we had it before. I may try it out later this month, and then we can see what everyone thinks. Until then, my ability to read this thread is close to nothing. A few weeks down the road I'll read the whole thing.

It would nice to see locations as a requirement for threads. For example if I am selling something from SoCal my thread title would be:

FS: (SoCal) pacman cocktail

The way I've seen this enforced on other forums is that threads that don't have this in the title automatically get locked by the mods.

I like the separate sections. I don't mind browsing both. For me, the biggest complaint I have is the lack of location on the whole machine threads. I know it has been said before. For parts, I don't care because its inexpensive to ship the parts. I'll make a road trip for whole games. Making a mandatory location, even if it is just a state pull down menu, would be great.

Thanks, X

Either people aren't grasping the concept, or people aren't giving a crap. There are still people posting new parts FS, not WHOLE GAMES. I thought the split was a great concept and filter.

I like this idea. It's another filter for those not wanting to scan every thread posted only to find out that their desired game is 2000 miles away (I thought people were supposed to list location in the title anyways?). Most people don't ship, they drive up to a few hundred miles to pick up. Those who ship will not be phased by having the location listed in the title anyways. Maybe when listing the post there could be a mandatory box to list the zip code, and when entered, the zip will automatically post the name of the town & state in the title. Failing to list a zip code would not authorize the listing to post.
