Testing a flyback

Well, you test it from one side of the winding to the other side.

Is that an upside-down 6 in the schematic? if so, 1-6, 4-8, and 9-10 should give you good readings....

No, that's a 9. 9-10 go to the neck, I beleive and are not on the pins on the bottom of the flyback.

So, If the 3 pairs in the attached picture ring good, then the flyback should be good?

And this test is done with the machine turned OFF, right?

If it's on, you'll already know whether the monitor is working.

And in circuit, correct?

:)

With the tester he is referring to, it doesn't matter whether the flyback is in circuit or not. The Blue Ring Tester will test it either way, as long as you know what pins to test...

So the issue was the flyback. swapped it out and it works now.

So now I have a good repro and original red flyback. I also have about 12 red flybacks, some of which might be good.

I really need to figure out how to test it. :)

With the Blue ring tester you should have all green leds lit when testing each winding individually and two flashing LEDs when testing any other connection (open). A reading less than yellow should be considered bad in most cases but I would test a known good one first for comparison and go from there. I have tested several flys/coils that registered as a short but were still good.

Looking at the Amplifone FAQ, it appears that I just need to test from Pin 1 to Pin 9 (page 18 of the FAQ: http://ionpool.net/arcade/tech/ampfaq_12.pdf).

Can someone please verify this?

Strange thing is that the flyback I took out of the original HV tests good. I wonder if there was a cold solder joint?

Quick update.

My flyback is definitely bad.

You need to test the following:
- Pin 1 to Pin 8
- Pin 1 to Pin 9
- Pin 2 to Pin 8
- Pin 2 to Pin 9
