Test rig finished

I was trying to sell my "rigs" at a price point of $150, but the LCD's alone were ringing in at $80ea. After it was all said and done between the LCD, power supply, case and everything else, the price was $40 over my proposed selling price. I didn't think anyone would want $200 or $250 portable rigs, so I dropped the idea.

Now....if I could get the price of the LCD's down and maybe those power supplies, too... we'd be back in business. Then again, if people were OK with the idea of $200/$250 per unit, maybe I could just pick up where I left off and make a small (<100units) batch.

I would buy one!

Dave,

The 7" LCD panels I got from a local Pachinko dealer were Panasonic TR-LM7WR3PS. They take straight CGA both positive and negative sync and look pretty good (Williams games don't center though, or at least I haven't been able to get them to center).

When I was searching for them, I found a company in California that had 3 or 4 thousand of them in Taiwan. When they found out I only wanted 20, they blew me off. With your contacts, you might be able to find somebody to listen to you.

That's exactly what I was running into. Found a couple of China/Japan companies that had these. But, minimum order was 100. Without an intrest in over 100, they won't even give you a price.
Although, my friends wife is Japanese and she call one of the companies for me. They were willing to sell a small quantity, but, between customs, shipping and other issues they would have been over $100 each. Maybe if a dealer could buy in bulk?

Anyone know of a cheap (comparatively) place to buy a case that could be converted to something like this? I have a working 7" LCD already, and would like to find something to build something similar. I see some cases that look similar at Fry's, but they always have some type of molded interior that looks impossible to get out for customization.

Also, did you just decase and hard-wire in a digital multimeter for the voltage reading? Some more detailed info on how you did certain things would be helpful...

Woah thread resurection!

I may be able to find one at electronic surplus but it'll take a few stores to find one.

I wonder if those cosmetic cases may also work.

I could use a good case myself. I have all the other parts ready to go. I haven't found much that would work well except maybe old Samsonite briefcase.

I love my Sami and have had it for 30 years. Until I find another one like it im stuck.

Thread resurrection... I was thinking the same thing. It's funny because I just lent out my rig to a friend to fix a pcb and he was saying how he wants one now too.
First I'll answer the meter question (cause that's easy). I got a self contained LCD voltmeter off Fee-bay.

There are a few colors to choose from. Just do a search for "LCD voltmeter". Make sure you get the correct voltage range. Mine was 0v-20v.

The case, well, that was just a lucky find. The company I work for was throwing out some old test equipment. I just skeeved it out of the garbage. Some of that old industrial test equipment is great. Maybe search ebay for a company called "dynatel". I know they make some old test equipment, similar to the I got, that would be suitable, if you can get a good price for maybe a broken one. I don't remember what meter I made mine from, but I do remember it was some old HP analyzer.

How bout an old oscilloscope? They are large enough and already have a spot for a monitor. Some of the older ones even have a cover over the controls.

Quick search for test equipment cases and found these.

The Platt 310 might fit the bill. Of course the 600T is nice, but $125 might be a little too much for a project like this. Search the web for "Molded tool case"

I would be interested in one. The setup I have right now takes up a lot of space and something smaller would be nice to have.

I also am not too concerned about the style of case. You could go with a larger LCD too and that would be cool with me.

The only thing I would be concerned about would be the Molex connectors. I think I would prefer to see one with KK connectors like these:

To me, it seems it would be easier to swap in/out the test Harnesses.

if you stick one of these converter boards in ( GBS8220 ) you could stick any pc monitor inside the lid of the case! any size you wanted to!

GBS8220 available on ebay around $30

OMFG that is AWESOME. I wanna build it NOW.....

I need a case, I need a case, I need a case..........

Please PM me with build details!!

Very cool! I've been tempted to get my jamma test rig into a case like this. I'd likely put a couple male DB15 connectors on there to plug a couple neo geo pads in for controls instead of putting them onboard. I suspect I'll put a DB9 on there that is wired like an Amiga monitor for video. . not sure if I'll put an LCD onboard, although I have one that i could do it with. Hmm. . .

Anybody ever check their local Home Depot or Lowes? They have a bunch of tool cases (tackle box style) that might work.

Think I'll swing by Harbor Freight and Lowes tomorrow to see. Those Harbor Freight cases seem pretty darn nice for the price.
