just bought a mame cade from a board member. for some reason now the buttons/joystick dont work. it is using a jpac. the wireless keyboard i have connected seems to work. any advice on what to check on the jpac?

Disconnect the wireless keyboard/mouse and test the controls out. I've ran into these issues and for some reason unless you plug them in a certain way the Jpac or keyboard/mouse fight for control. I've also ran into similar issues with the Ipac.

You may have to disconnect the Jpac also and plug one in at a time in order to get any type of response.

How interesting. Was having lots of issues with my Jpac and a misbehaving wireless keyboard and intermittent issues with joystick and button presses being lost.

I switched from the wireless keyboard to a wired one and have never had an issue since.

so update on testing.. if i plug the jpac ps2 into another computer I have, everything seems to work except the player 1 joystick won't go up, down, or left...it will go right

anyone know someone in the austin area who can help troubleshoot?

also the jpac self test light stays lit which i think is a good thing

Where does the ground go on jamma? The ground at pins 1/2 (power supply end) are dead on jpac. So if your other inputs are using the ground at other end (by buttons) then then theres your answer

Try sending/programming your button configuration to the JPAC again using the WinIPAC program. It also has a test menu you can bring up to see what button inputs are registering properly. I've had a few instances where it's programming got confused/corrupted and that did the trick.

damn.. half of what you said went over my head.

could the grounds get messed up when transporting a machine like that?

Oh I remember you. You didn't want to buy a Mame from me cause my prices were too high.....
My machines are warrantied for a year ;)

lol.. you also wanted 10x more than I was looking to pay.. but I dont want to get into a pissing match

Im pretty sure that light stays on. I'll check tonight when I get home

Just to clarify;
The machine worked before transport?
Did you unplug or disassemble anything for transport?

machine did work prior and we didn't unplug or disassemble thing. it was riding upright in the back of a pickup.

unfortunately i dont know much about electrical things so the whole grounded wire and that type of thing is a little foreign.

know anyone in austin who is good at troubleshooting?

I guess I will say this again - you should really open up the button test in WinIPAC for starters and then if the button in question doesn't register send the configuration down the JPAC again from within WinIPAC.

ok. made progress.. got the jpac to work. using a ps2/usb to usb for the computer. Problem now is all the buttons work except joy1 up, down, left and player 1 button 2.... i have it hooked up to an pc with winipac for testing.

i;m assuming it is probably a solder or connection issue. Unfortunately I don';tknow how to solder or how the connectors work, but i guess i can learn

Are the switches actually clicking when pressed? Have you jumped a ground from a working switch to the problem switches to see if it's a bad switch/bad ground.

Do you have a multimeter to check continuity from all grounds?

no. i dont know how to do any of that. so what i did in the meantime is used the jpac software to make the player 2 controls, player 1s so now I can play I just play on the right side of the cade.

so that being said, it is probably something loose with some of the player 1 connections. this is where i need to learn about grounds and all that. best place to learn?
