I have a Midway Terminator 2 arcade machine which was fine up until recently when the voice synthisis stopped, so no Arnold talking. The music and sound effects are all there, just no 'I'll Be Back' and I so want him back.

Any ideas?

Put it in test mode and run throught the sound test. If you can isolate the chip on the sound board it could be a bad socket or chip.

Thanks for the reply.

Ive already had it in test mode, it comes up onscreen with the sound it should be playing, but doesnt play the voices, all sound effects, music bombs etc are there but no voice!
All ROMs check out OK on the test.

Can you tell which ROMs are for the speech in the schematic. Might have a seperate CPU for speech? I have on but it's buried

no no, you want to run the "General Test" under Sound Test. it will play a certain number of tones to tell you which rom(s) is/are problematic.

the sound board hardware itself has Oki and Yamaha components (judging by the titles of the samples in the test), which probably means it's just a regular Y-unit sound board, I'm going to guess it's the same kind like MK1 (not of the older Williams variety) so if you got one of those laying around, compare the hardware and maybe swap roms and see if the problem carries. I have a bunch of Midway shit laying around, so that's easy for me to say. :p

actually even better yet, does the game only play one beep sound upon powerup or does it start a sequence of beeps like 4 or 5? either of those signifies a rom error.

Im a complete novice with this, just someone who has started collecting old video games, so I dont have any spare parts at all.

I have run all the tests I can find in the menus and they dont report any problems, all coming up green colored.

I get just the one beep when its powered on, which is a good sign I think?

one beep is normal, the tests described here are located when you switch the switch in the coin door to test. and used the gun\player button to cycle through them. The ROM test is a startup test seen at startup.

Ive done the coin door switch tests, through all the menus, it comes up on screen the sound which should be playing but doesnt do any speech, just sound effects, the screen says it should be speaking but its not. Then when it says sound effects they play as normal. All ROMs show as green.
My friend had one of these machines and he said something about clearing the memory, through the menus to a clear memory setting but I cant find it. Am I barking up the wrong tree?

go under Utilities, then select Full Factory Restore

you'll have to calibrate the guns again if you do this though, and any high scores or whatever that are saved will be lost.

and... it probably won't help your situation any I'm afraid.

:/

Resurrecting a dead thread

I've a similar issue to the OP. My ROMs all pass the self-test, and music plays just fine. It's the digitized speech that is a problem. It plays but it stutters and appears to be playing more than just the piece it's supposed to be. Very trippy but I need a fix. I've already re-soldered the header pins on both the sound and main CPU board, and touched up a LOT of cracked solder joints on the sound board.

Any idea whether this is an issue with the sound board, or with the main board? Are there readily-available replacements for the sound board I can purchase?

Thanks,

Brad

I was going to buy this machine for 400.00 but the screen or is it a plastic screen in front is scratch with a few letters. Does anyone know where to buy a new replacement for this?
