So we're having a very strange problem where Terminator plays an entirely different sound than what it is supposed to on just about everything. When it is supposed to play the door crashing shut sound on the title screen, it instead plays Arnold saying "Look out." When you navigate the menu (which we have to do everyday because it forgets its settings despite a new battery), it plays a song instead of the normal Williams sounds for pressing the test buttons. When it hits the jet bumpers it plays "Get the extra ball" or the motorcycle vroom noise. And so on.

Haven't had a lot of time to dive into it, but I was wondering if anyone had encountered a similar problem before? Or if anyone could at least save me some time and point me int he direction of the sound chip that is probably screwing up to cause this to happen?

may wanna try pinside.com They're a bit more pinball oriented then this site.

First thing to do is try reseating the cables as that sometimes fixes problems like this.

Other issues to look at:

Not mentioned in the Pinwiki link are the ROMs - reseat them as well. If you can read them also verify the checksums. Also make sure the sockets are ok.

Also very important while you are inspecting the board is to look at the tantalum caps:

It is rare where all these caps on the board are good. Failures of these caps usually lead to more catastrophic failures of the sound board down the line which is not good since replacements for this board are unobtanium.

Okay, thanks for the advice. I'll check into it if I get the chance today (things are hectic here). We've had other issues related to the connectors and I wasn't sure if this would also be caused by that. I've got a set of new molex and connectors to work with

I had a very similar issue on my Funhouse once. Turns out I had the ribbon cable on the sound PCB seated improperly.

This.

Definitely check and re-seat the cables first. Similar issues on a Sega Frankenstein; cable was connected, but was connected so that only one row of pins was actually connected - caused lots of wacky/wrong sounds to play.

Worst-case, suspect/check/replace U29 and/or U30 (74LS374) on the sound board.

So I finally got to this a couple weeks ago and there were three things I did and it was fixed. I had to replace two of the molex connectors on the board with new ones as they had previously burned at some point. Obviously since I had to take the board out to do this all the cables got reseated again (though, I had certainly tried this before posting about it to no avail but it's worth mentioning because it might work for others). I also carefully removed and reseated the chips on the sound board. After all this it was fixed, so the issue was likely one or all of these things. Thanks again for the help.
