Terminator 2 - Game restarting at beginning of multiball

Weird problem, at the start of multiball my T2 will begin a new game. I have the game set for free play so if Im on ball 1...the game will just add player 2. And the 3 and 4 if I start multiball again. If Im on ball 2, the "Judgement day" sound is played, and the score is reset to 0 and the game continues.

I have narrowed this down to when the ball is fired from the cannon into the center target to start multiball. If I miss the center target, the problem does not occur.

The start button, the center target, and the cannon home switch are all on the same switch line. I have checked and there appears to be no breaks or shorts. I have replaced the center target on the 5 target bank, checked all diodes, and switches.

Im stuck. Does this sound more like a software, board, or physical problem?

what am I over looking?

Thanks in advance.

probably the +5 volt is operating below normal value and the game resets

there is a MOD for this. you need to cut a couple traces to isolate the bottle cap transistor from ground and solder in a 22 OHM resistor to bump the +4.93 volts up to +5.1v

look for the MOD here:

you will have to scroll down and see which fix is the same as yours

could be the ribbon connector between the CPU and the driver board is bad/high resistance. also could be BR 2 and/or the 15,000 uf cap at C5 is bad. the capacitor at C4 could be replaced/bumped up with a 470uf too

I don't have a manual or a T2 anymore but I would check the diode on that switch and make sure you have one, and its good. If you have the manual check and see if that switch is on the same line as the start button, if it is I would also bet that you have the restart game option set to immediate so when you hit the center switch with a possible bad diode it is also triggering the start button and restarting the game.

Sorry, I halfway read your post LOL but it does sound like the diode is still bad on that switch. I would go into your adjustments and set the game restart to Never and see if the problem goes away if it does you still have a problem with the switch if not then I would assume software.

ok, here is more info... 1) tried different CPU board...no help, same problem. 2) checked all switches on the line again and they all are working with no shorts. Diodes seem good as well. 3) I disconnected the cannon harness and hit the center targer with my finger during the "shoot the target for multiball" and every time I hit the center target the game would add a player to the game as if the start button was pressed.

I replaced the center target with a new one, including the diode. No help.

Still stuck.

for the record..EVERYTHING else works as it should.

not totally sure but couldnt any of the diodes on the switches in that matrix being bad cause this?

I assume you mean just that switch line and not the entire matrix right?

I thought i might have had the center target switch wired wrong, so i switched the diode and the white/orange wire and then everytime I activated the center target...the start button switch would also activate. So i put it back.

well....I noticed that someone had did some creative wiring on the coin door. The right and left coin switches SHOULD have their own ground line. BUT somewhere in the past, someone cut the left switch ground for some reason and jumpered to the right switch ground. I cut the jumper, and wired the correct ground wire and NOW the problem is gone. BUT....now target 4 (right below the center target) and the left sling have stopped responding.

giving up for the night LOL.

The target was not responding in gameplay or switchtest. Same goes for the sling shot. I havent done a coil test yet on the sling, but im betting it will be ok. Going to dive beack into it when I get home today.

At my daughters Invention Convention right now so hopefully she will win, someone will buy her invention, make a million dollars, and then Ill just buy a new T2. ;-)

Maybe the fix was to jerry rig the coin door grounds? Haha. You'll get it. Hopefully she wins and sells the invention for billions so you can buy us all a new t2

I thought of that but the sling and the 4th target dont share any of the wires on the line in the matrix, so i cant see how they would effect each other. But considering that they went down after i fixed the other problem says different.

Im sure its going to be one of those "that was it!?!?" problems once I figure it out.

Yea from what I've seen at work in the automotive industry is if someone has some wiring rigged. There's probably more

A shorted diode in the switch matrix doesn't necessarily cause problems with the row or column it's in. It could definitely cause problems with other rows or columns depending on what's shorted and where it is.

Well...I found the problem with the 4th target and the sling. I must have pulled on one of the 4th target wires to hard when i was fishing through the harness, It broke free of the solder but was still close enough to it that just from looking at it...it appeared to be connected. I resoldered it back on and now the target and sling work again. BUT... I guess my original problem never got solved, it is STILL doing it. About 75% of the time I shoot the center target on the bank of 5 FROM the Cannon....the game is still restarting or adding another player.

I have the "Profanty" roms installed. Thought maybe it was a bug in the software but i installed my originals and the problem is still there.

I REALLY dont want to cut out and check every diode on the matrix. Anyone have a crystal ball or a psychic friend that can tell me where to look? LOL

ok...taking the game OFF freeplay and not having any credits other then the one in play...the problem does not occur. Any extra credits and it restarts.

Im about to be fine with just adding one credit at a time and making the game a single player. LOL

is it possible that this is something in the settings?

I would love for it to be something that easy, but i cant think of anything in the settings that would make the game do this. I gotta have a shorted wire or diode somewhere in that switch line...I just cant find it.

driving me nuts.

yea i just read the manual haha BORING!!!! anyways i would say put it in burn in mode
and let it run. see what happens maybe it will throw something out there, or switch test.

My Addams Family was restarting at Thing Multiball--a similar situation to your problem here. I turned off free play and now it doesn't reset. I'm sure the problem still exists, but it's playable now. Thanks for the info.
